The Colorado Rockies and Texas Rangers meet Friday in MLB action at Globe Life Field.
The Colorado Rockies were a disappointing team last season that won just 71 games and they didn’t make any key additions this offseason to like their chances in the NL West. The good news is the Rockies return their batting lineup that was fifth in batting average, ninth in OPS and ninth in runs scored. The bad news is the Rockies didn’t improve a starting rotation that was 30th in ERA and 30th in WHIP. Yes, some of those numbers have to do with playing half their games in Coors, but the Rockies starters and their bullpen was tattooed all of last season. The Rockies aren’t going anywhere until the pitching improves. German Marquez gets the ball for the Rockies, and he was 12-5 with a 4.76 ERA and 175 strikeouts last season. This will be Marquez’s first career game against the Rangers.
The Texas Rangers were an up and down team last season that won 78 games and couldn’t find enough consistency from their pitching staff. The Rangers hope that adding three new starters in Corey Kluber, Kyle Gibson and Jordan Lyles improves a starting staff that was 25th in ERA and 28th in WHIP last season. The Rangers offense has potential at the top of the order staying intact, and additions of Todd Frazier and Robinson Chirinos does inject some pop to add balance. The Texas Rangers have some sneaky potential, but they’re in a tough division in the AL West. Lance Lynn gets the ball for the Rangers, and he was 16-11 with a 3.67 ERA and 246 strikeouts last season. Lynn is 2-2 with a 2.76 ERA and 36 strikeouts in his career against the Rockies.
The Rockies are 4-1 in their last 5 games following an off day, 21-45 in their last 66 games as an underdog and 15-39 in their last 54 road games. The Rangers are 4-1 in their last 5 games as a favorite, 2-5 in their last 7 interleague home games and 4-10 in their last 14 overall. The over is 5-1 in Rockies last 6 interleague games. The over is 7-1 in Rangers last 8 overall. The Rockies are 2-7 in the last 9 meetings.
I'm just not all that high on the Colorado Rockies due to them not making any adjustments to last years roster, and Marquez isn't a pitcher who should be starting on opening day. Lynn was one of the more underrated pitchers in the league last season and averaged 10.6 strikeouts per nine innings while finishing fifth in the CY Young voting. There's a decent gap in this starting pitching matchup, so you can argue this line is rather soft in the Rangers favor.
I like the home team to get the nod Friday night.
