The Arizona Diamondbacks and the San Diego Padres meet in an NL West division matchup from Petco Park on Saturday night.
The Arizona Diamondbacks will look to rebound from a 7-2 loss to the Padres in game one on Friday. Kole Calhoun went 2 for 4 with a solo home run while Christian Walker went 2 for 4 with an RBI as well in the loss. Jake Lamb added a double while Starling Marte and Ketel Marte each chipped in a base hit to round out Arizona’s offense as a team in the losing effort. Madison Bumgarner took the loss, falling to 0-1 after allowing three runs on four hits while striking out four over 5.2 innings of work. Robbie Ray is expected to start game two here and was 12-8 with a 4.34 ERA and 235 strikeouts last season. In his career, Ray is 5-5 with a 4.28 ERA and 123 strikeouts against San Diego.
The San Diego Padres will look to build on their strong start in the opener on Friday. Eric Hosmer led the charge, going 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles and six RBIs, while Tommy Pham added an RBI of his own in the winning effort. Fernando Tatis Jr. added a double while Manny Machado, Ty France and Trent Grisham each chipped in a base hit as well in the victory. Chris Paddack got the win to improve to 1-0 after tossing six shutout innings, allowing just four hits while striking out four. Dinelson Lamet is expected to get the start here and was 3-5 with a 4.07 ERA and 105 strikeouts last season. In his career, Lamet is 0-1 with a 14.04 ERA and 7 strikeouts against Arizona.
Arizona is 16-5 in their last 21 division games and 1-7 in their last 8 games as an underdog while the over is 8-3-1 in their last 12 games overall. San Diego is 6-20 in their last 26 games overall and 7-19 in their last 26 division games while the over is 7-3-2 in their last 12 division games. Arizona is 2-5 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams in San Diego.
Ray definitely had a drop off in 2019 after emerging as a key part of Arizona’s rotation and he wasn’t great against the Padres, giving up 10 runs in 16.2 innings across three starts. Lamet on the other hand has been terrible against Arizona, allowing 15 runs, 13 earned, in just over eight innings in two starts. I think both offenses wake up for this one, so I’ll take the over.
