The Pittsburgh Pirates and the St. Louis Cardinals meet Saturday in MLB action from Busch Stadium.
This will be game two of three in the Cardinals’ home opener series. In the Friday matchup, the Cardinals held a 3-0 lead after six innings but had to hold on for a nail-biter 5-4 win. Check back all season long for free MLB picks and MLB predictions at Sports Chat Place.
After six innings of futility in the Friday game, Pittsburgh finally broke through with two runs in the seventh and two more in the ninth. It was a tough loss, but the Pirates do have some positive takeaways. Both Colin Moran and Marcel Osuna had two hits, and combined for two runs and two RBI as well. Starting pitcher Joe Musgrove finished with 5.2 innings, three earned, seven strikeouts and two homers surrendered.
For Saturday’s game, the Pirates will be sending out RHP Trevor Williams in the starting role. Williams posted a 7-9 record in 2019 with a 5.38 ERA and 113 strikeouts in 145.2 total innings of work. Over his career, Williams holds a 29-29 record with a 4.22 ERA and 367 Ks in 479.1 innings.
Over on the Cardinals’ side, things got pretty hectic in the Friday matchup. What was once a comfortable lead evaporated over the last few innings, and St. Louis should consider themselves fortunate. It was a nice power showcase for the Cards, though. Paul O’Neill, Dexter Fowler and Paul DeJong each had home runs in the win.
For the Saturday matchup, St. Louis will send Adam Wainwright to the mound as the starter. Last season, Wainwright went 14-10 overall with a 4.19 ERA and 153 strikeouts in 171.2 innings pitched. He was a key piece in the Cardinals’ National League Central Division title in 2019 and Wainwright pitched some big games down the stretch.
The Pirates are 1-6 in their last seven in game two of a series and 0-4 in their last four Saturday games. The under is 43-21-3 in Pittsburgh’s last 67 Saturday games and they’re 4-12 in their last 16 overall.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals are 1-6 in their last seven in game two of a series and 36-17 in their last 53 versus the National League Central. St. Louis is 1-4 in their last five overall and 3-5 in their last eight home games.
Pick: I’m going Cardinals here. Wainwright keeps chugging along year after year. He had a couple of injury-plagued seasons but the 2019 rebound is encouraging. Wainwright will be a big part of St. Louis’ plans for success in 2020.
It will be interesting on the other side to watch Williams, as he’s made a conscious effort to address the issues that plagued him in the stats categories last season. It’s just difficult to pick Pittsburgh as a whole to do much of anything this season.
