The Los Angeles Angels and Oakland Athletics meet Sunday in MLB action at Oakland Coliseum.
The Los Angeles Angels look for a series victory after winning Saturday’s game 4-1. The Angels pitching staff has held its own for the most part through 19 innings, but that offense needs more consistency if this season is going to be different than the past. David Fletcher leads the Angels with two hits and three RBI while Andrelton Simmons and Tommy La Stella have combined for four hits and one RBI. Shohei Ohtani gets the ball for the Angels, and he was 4-2 with a 3.31 ERA and 63 strikeouts in the 2018 season. Ohtani is 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA and 18 strikeouts in his career against the Athletics.
The Oakland Athletics couldn’t follow up a walk-off victory with another win, so they hope to settle for the season win here. The A’s have yet to play to their full potential, and they’ve been held scoreless in 15 of their 19 innings. Ramon Laureano leads the Athletics with four hits and two RBI while Matt Olson and Robbie Grossman have combined for three hits and five RBI. Mike Fiers gets the ball for the Athletics, and he was 15-4 with a 3.90 ERA and 126 strikeouts last season. Fiers is 6-4 with a 4.99 ERA and 59 strikeouts in his career against the Angels.
The Angels are 1-5 in their last 6 Sunday games, 7-22 in their last 29 road games and 7-20 in their last 27 vs. American League West. The Athletics are 7-1 in their last 8 games as a home underdog, 35-16 in their last 51 home games and 39-19 in their last 58 overall. The over is 5-0 in Angels last 5 road games. The under is 7-1 in Athletics last 8 overall. The Angels are 1-8 in the last 9 meetings.
I have a hard time backing the Angels here because I just don't know what to expect from Ohtani on the mound, a guy who hasn't pitched since September 2 of 2018. The Oakland Athletics are not only the better team here from top to bottom, but Fiers has been incredible since the move to Oakland, which includes a 2.90 ERA and .217 allowed batting average in home games last season. I'll take the Oakland Athletics and the more favorable price, as this line feels like an overreaction to Ohtani pitching.
