The Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres meet Sunday in MLB action at Petco Park.
The Arizona Diamondbacks hope to find some offense in the third game and avoid a 0-3 start to the season. The Arizona Diamondbacks have been outscored 12-3 in the first two games and hope to avoid their first 0-3 start to the season since 2014. Christian Walker leads the Diamondbacks with three hits and two RBI while Starling Marte and Kole Calhoun have combined for six hits and one RBI. Zac Gallen gets the ball for the Diamondbacks, and he was 3-6 with a 2.81 ERA and 96 strikeouts last season. This will be Gallen’s second career game against the Padres.
The San Diego Padres have dominated through the first two games and their pitching staff has been nothing but money. While it’s still very early to a short season, the San Diego Padres look like the team some expected to see last season when they spent big money in free agency. Manny Machado leads the Padres with two hits and two RBI while Fernando Tatis Jr. and Trent Grisham have combined for four hits. Garrett Richards gets the ball for the Padres, and he was 0-1 with a 8.31 ERA and 11 strikeouts last season. Richards is 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA and 15 strikeouts in his career against the Diamondbacks.
The Diamondbacks are 2-7 in their last 9 road games, 1-4 in their last 5 Sunday games and 16-5 in their last 21 vs. National League West. The Padres are 5-2 in their last 7 Sunday games, 7-3 in their last 10 games as a favorite and 7-20 in their last 27 overall. The over is 9-3-1 in Diamondbacks last 13 overall. The over is 3-1-1 in Padres last 5 home games. The Diamondbacks are 2-6 in the last 8 meetings in San Diego and 8-2 in the last 10 meetings.
Gallen is actually a decent young pitcher who has true potential and made us some nice money last season for those who followed along. It's also going to be interesting to see what Richards looks like given that we haven't seen much of him the last couple of years. While the Diamondbacks may have the starting pitching edge, it's the San Diego Padres who have been so solid through the first two games that they're tough to bet against right now. I'm optimistic about this start holding true, but I'll back the Padres until they give me a reason not to... For now.
