The Chicago White Sox and the Cleveland Indians meet game one of a doubleheader in an AL Central division matchup from Progressive Field on Tuesday afternoon.
The Chicago White Sox will look to rebound after dropping the rubber match of their series finale with the Twins by a final score of 14-2. Luis Robert led the way with a two-run home run while Adam Engel went 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles. Jose Abreu and Yasmani Grandal each had a base hit as the White Sox had just six hits as a team in the losing effort. Reynaldo Lopez took the loss, falling to 0-1 after allowing four runs on three hits in less than an inning of work. Dylan Cease will start game one and was 4-7 with a 5.79 ERA and 81 strikeouts last season. This will be Cease’s second career start against Cleveland.
The Cleveland Indians will look to build on a 9-2 win over Kansas City in their last outing. Jose Ramirez led the Tribe by going 3 for 5 with a pair of home runs and four RBIs while Domingo Santana and Francisco Lindor each had a double and an RBI with Santana going 3 for 3 at the dish in the win. Bradley Zimmer and Franmil Reyes each had an RBI while Cesar Hernandez went 2 for 4 at the dish. Mike Freeman, Sandy Leon and Yu Chang each had base hits as well to finish off Cleveland’s offense as a team in the win. Carlos Carrasco gave up two runs on five hits while striking out ten over six innings of work to improve to 1-0 with the win. Aaron Civale will start game one and was 3-4 with a 2.34 ERA and 46 strikeouts last season. In his career, Civale is 1-1 with a 2.34 ERA and 46 strikeouts against the White Sox.
Chicago is 5-2 in their last 7 games overall and 7-17 in their last 24 road games against a right-handed starter while the over is 5-2 in their last 7 series opening matchups. Cleveland is 7-2 in their last 9 home games and 39-15 in their last 54 division games while the over is 7-3 in their last 10 games overall. Chicago is 6-14 in the last 20 meetings between these two teams in Cleveland.
Cleveland had a fairly easy opening weekend against the Royals while the White Sox were in tough against the Twins, so maybe this series will even everything out as I could see these two teams being on par down the road this season. However, for this game, the Tribe come in in better form, and Civale was solid for much of his short time in the big leagues last season. Cease had his moments, but he also had a tendency to get batted around once in a while. Civale’s just the more reliable arm at the moment, so I’ll lay the juice with Cleveland here.
