The Seattle Mariners and the Los Angeles Angels meet in an AL West division matchup from Angel Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Seattle Mariners will look to bounce back after losing their series with Houston after an 8-5 loss to the Astros in the series finale on Monday. Evan White led the Mariners with a two-run home run while Kyle Seager had an RBI and J.P. Crawford added a double. Kyle Lewis went 2 for 4 while Dee Gordon, Tim Lopes and Jose Marmolejos each added a base hit as well in the loss. Kendall Graveman allowed six runs on six hits while striking out seven over four innings of work, taking the loss to fall to 0-1 this season. Justus Sheffield will start game one and was 0-1 with a 5.50 ERA and 37 strikeouts last season. This will be Sheffield’s first career start against the Angels.
The Los Angeles Angels will look to rebound after losing their series with Oakland following a 3-0 loss to the A’s in the series finale on Monday. David Fletcher and Tommy La Stella each had two hits with La Stella adding a double. Justin Upton, Albert Pujols, Jason Castro, Andrelton Simmons and Max Stassi each chipped in a base hit in the losing effort. Griffin Canning allowed three runs on four hits while striking out seven over 4.2 innings of work to drop to 0-1 on the year. Patrick Sandoval will start game one and was 0-4 with a 5.03 ERA and 42 strikeouts last year. This will be Sandoval’s first career start against Seattle.
Seattle is 3-7 in their last 10 games overall and 17-45 in their last 62 division games while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 games against a left-handed starter. Los Angeles is 17-39 in their last 56 games overall and 8-21 in their last 29 division games while the under is 6-1 in their last 7 Tuesday games. The over is 6-2 in the last 8 meetings between these two teams and 4-1 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams in Los Angeles.
So we have two teams that struggled in their opening series, but I think you could argue that the Angels were the bigger disappointment based on the expectations that were put in front of them to start the season. We knew the Mariners were probably going to be bad in all honesty. With that said, I’m not going near a side in this one as this pitching matchup is horrendous, which leads me to side with the over. Both teams are capable offensively, and both also have issues keeping runs off of the board. Give me the over in this spot.
