The Kansas City Royals and the Detroit Tigers meet Wednesday in MLB action from Comerica Park.
This will be the final matchup of a three-game set between these teams. The Royals won big 14-6 in the Monday opener. In Tuesday’s game, Detroit got some revenge by eking out a 4-3 victory. Check back all season long for free MLB picks and MLB predictions at Sports Chat Place.
Every bit of the Royals’ scoring came in the third inning Tuesday, and they all came on one swing. Whit Merrifield clocked a three-run homer as his only hit of the game, and Kansas City couldn’t do anything after that. Pitching-wise, the loss went to Tyler Zuber, who gave up three earned on two homers in one inning of work. Past the third inning, Kansas City only gave up three hits and no runs.
For the Wednesday game, Kansas City will go with LHP Danny Duffy in the start. He went 7-6 in 2019 with a 4.34 ERA and 115 strikeouts in 130.2 innings. Duffy suffered a loss on Opening Day, going 4.1 innings with three hits, two runs and two strikeouts.
Over on the Tigers’ side, Rony Garcia coughed up the big Merrifield home run in the third on Tuesday, but that was the only real damage. The Detroit bullpen held up well after that, and didn’t give up a hit after the fifth inning. Offensively, Jonathan Schoop and Christin Stewart each had two-run homers.
In Wednesday’s matchup, Detroit will send out Matthew Boyd as the starter. Last season, he was 9-12 with a 4.56 ERA and 238 Ks in 185.1 innings. Boyd also lost his Opening Day appearance, giving up six hits and four earned in 5.0 innings of action.
The Royals are 45-93 in their last 138 road games and 6-13 in their last 19 games overall. Kansas City is also 5-13 in their last 18 Wednesday games and 25-71 in their last 96 during game three of a series.
Meanwhile, the Tigers are 20-45 in their last 65 Wednesday games and 16-36 in their last 52 games versus a left-handed starter. Detroit is 23-74 in their last 97 games on grass and 13-53 in their last 66 home games.
Pick: I’m leaning Tigers here. Neither Duffy nor Boyd had great Opening Day experiences this year, but both should look better in this matchup. Boyd in particular had some wild command issues that led to a 30-pitch first inning during his loss. Although Boyd went a relatively tepid 2-2 with a 6.00 ERA in five starts versus Kansas City last year, I like him to rebound and post a quality start here. Should be a fun and competitive game to watch.
