The Tampa Bay Rays and the Baltimore Orioles meet Friday in MLB action from Oriole Park.
Tampa Bay is coming off a four-game set versus the Braves this week. The Rays went 2-1 in the first three games, then on Friday Tampa fell by a score of 2-1 to split the series. As for the Orioles, they just finished a pair versus the Yankees. Baltimore lost 9-3 on Wednesday, and in the Thursday game the Orioles dropped another one 8-6. Tampa Bay out-hit the Braves 5-3 on Thursday, but couldn’t come up with more than one run. Ji-Man Choi notched the lone RBI in a 1-for-1 pinch-hitting outing, while Willy Adames hit a double and plated a run. Ryan Yarbrough took the loss for the Rays with 6.1 innings, two earned, three walks and six strikeouts.
For Friday’s matchup, the Rays are going with LHP Blake Snell in the starting role. Last season, Snell went 6-8 with a 4.29 ERA and 147 strikeouts in 107.0 innings of work. In his first appearance of the 2020 season, Snell threw two scoreless innings and racked up five strikeouts versus the Blue Jays.
Over on the Orioles’ side, they had a 6-5 lead on the Yankees going into the ninth inning, but coughed up three runs and blew the win. Offensively, Hanser Alberto managed two hits and a two-run homer, as did Rio Ruiz. Pedro Severino went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer of his own as well.
For Friday’s game, Baltimore will send out Alex Cobb as the starter. Cobb went 0-2 in limited action last season, posting a 10.95 ERA in 12.1 innings with eight strikeouts. His season was shortened due to hip surgery. In his 2020 debut, Cobb was solid with 5.1 innings in a win over the Red Sox.
The Rays are 6-2 in their last eight Friday games and 37-16 in their last 53 games as a favorite. Tampa Bay is 0-4 in their last four road games and 10-3 in their last 13 during game one of a series.
Meanwhile, the Orioles are 21-47 in their last 68 Friday games and 26-60 in their last 86 home games. Baltimore is 84-202 in their last 286 games as an underdog and 20-67 in their last 87 during game one of a series.
Pick: I like Tampa Bay. Snell should be a nice opener option here, and I expect him to last three or four innings. The Rays’ pitching staff is one of the team’s major strengths, so Baltimore is going to have to make the most of any opportunities. The Orioles have shown some spark on offense here and there, but I don’t think they’ll be able to break through in this game.
