The St. Louis Cardinals and the Milwaukee Brewers meet in an NL Central division game from Miller Park on Saturday night.
The St. Louis Cardinals had the opener of this series postponed due to a couple of positive COVID cases in their staff, meaning the Cardinals won’t have played since their 3-0 loss to the Twins in their last game. Paul Goldschmidt, Yadier Molina and Dexter Fowler each had a base knock as the Cardinals combined to log just three base hits as a team in the losing effort. Daniel Ponce de Leon took the loss, falling to 0-1 after allowing three runs on two hits with 8 strikeouts. Jack Flaherty will start game one and is 1-0 with a 2.57 ERA and 6 strikeouts this season. In his career, Flaherty is 2-4 with a 4.56 ERA and 74 strikeouts against Milwaukee.
The Milwaukee Brewers will look to bounce back after being postponed on Friday. The Brew Crew’s last performance saw the game finish with a 3-0 win over Pittsburgh in their last outing. All of Milwaukee’s damage on the scoreboard came via the long ball as Ben Gamel had a two-run home run while Keston Hiura chipped in a solo homer to finish off Milwaukee’s scoring a team in the win. Ryan Braun, Jedd Gyorko and Avisail Garcia each had a base hit as well to cap off Milwaukee’s offense as a team as the Brewers had just six hits as a team in defeat. Brandon Woodruff threw 6.1 innings, allowing just one hit while striking out ten. Josh Hader closed out the 9th for his first save of the season. Brett Anderson will start this one and was 13-9 with a 3.89 ERA and 90 strikeouts for Oakland last season. In his career, Anderson is 0-2 with a 2.63 ERA and 10 strikeouts against St. Louis.
St. Louis is 2-7 in their last 9 games overall and 37-18 in their last 55 division games while the over is 5-1 in their last 6 series-opening games. Milwaukee is 4-0 in their last 4 home games and 21-9 in their last 30 games overall while the under is 8-2 in their last 10 games against a team with a losing record. St. Louis is 9-4 in the last 13 meetings between these two teams.
I've said before that Flaherty is one of my favorite pitchers in the majors, as the guy just has the ace-type stuff and he's maturing into St. Louis' staff ace before our eyes. However, the offense hasn't been there for St. Louis lately as they've scored just four runs in their last three games. Milwaukee's been more consistent with the scoring early on but I also think Flaherty keeps the Brew Crew in check here. I'll side with the under as my free pick for this game.
