The Los Angeles Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks meet Sunday in MLB action from Chase Field.
This will be the final matchup of a three-game set between these teams. The Diamondbacks won game one Friday 5-3, then in the Saturday game Los Angeles struck back with a huge 11-2 victory to even the series. Check back all season long for free MLB picks and MLB predictions at Sports Chat Place.
The Dodgers didn’t have much trouble plating runs or notching hits in the Saturday game. Los Angeles out-hit Arizona 11-5 in that matchup and plated eight runs between the fourth and fifth innings. The offense was very well spread out by the Dodgers, as Corey Seager was the only player with more than one hit. Chris Taylor stepped in for a three-run homer in pinch hitting duties there as well.
For the Sunday start, Los Angeles will send out ace Clayton Kershaw. This will be Kershaw’s first appearance of 2020, as he was scratched from his Opening Day start due to back stiffness. After a 10-day injured list stint, Kershaw is back. He’s got a 2.84 ERA in 205.2 career innings versus Arizona in 33 starts.
Over on the Diamondbacks’ side, they were only able to put up five hits as a team on Sunday. No Arizona player had more than one hit. Eduardo Escobar and Carson Kelly were the only guys on the team to notch an RBI. Starting pitcher Luke Weaver imploded for six earned in 4.0 innings of work.
For Sunday’s start, Arizona will go with Merrill Kelly. In his first action of 2020 on Tuesday, Kelly was awesome and carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning. He would end up with three hits in 7.2 innings overall. Kelly went 13-14 with a 4.42 ERA and 158 strikeouts in 183.1 innings last year.
The Dodgers are 8-2 in their last 10 games versus a right-handed starter and 38-13 in their last 51 Sunday games. Los Angeles is 14-6 in their last 20 games overall and 73-33 in their last 106 versus the National League West.
Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks are 6-1 in their last seven home games and 18-7 in their last 25 games versus the National League West. Arizona is 3-12 in their last 15 games as an underdog and the under is 5-0 in their last five games versus the National League West.
Pick: I’m sticking with the Dodgers. This should be a really interesting matchup with a couple of good starting pitchers taking the hill. Ultimately I like Kershaw to outperform Kelly here, but there probably won’t be much scoring going on until the later innings. It wouldn’t be crazy to take the Diamondbacks on something of a value pick, but I feel a little more comfortable on Kershaw and the Dodgers in this particular matchup.
