The Chicago White Sox and the Kansas City Royals meet Sunday in MLB action from Kauffman Stadium.
This will be the finale of a three-game weekend set between these teams. In the Friday opener, the White Sox eked out a 3-2 win. In the Saturday game two, Chicago jumped out to a 7-0 lead after five innings, and ended up cruising to an 11-5 victory. The White Sox got some great offense in the Saturday game, and that helped propel the team to a win. Eloy Jimenez was one of the big hitters there, notching a 4-for-6 night with a three-run homer and four total RBIs. Luis Robert was also a huge producer for the White Sox on Saturday. He notched a 4-for-6 line, a solo homer, two runs and two RBIs for his efforts.
For the Sunday matchup, the White Sox will send out Dylan Cease in the start. Last season, Cease went 4-7 on the year with a 4.79 ERA and 81 strikeouts in 73.0 innings of work. His first start of 2020 didn’t go so well, as Cease coughed up four runs in 2.1 innings with two home runs allowed.
Over on the Royals’ side, they really couldn’t get the scoring going outside of a three-run sixth inning on Saturday. There were a few offensive standouts for Kansas City, however. Whit Merrifield posted a two-run homer with a 3-for-5 line. Ryan O’Hearn also had a solid line with a 3-for-4 effort, two RBI and a run. Starting pitcher Ronald Bolanos didn’t last long with 1.2 innings, five earned and two walks.
For the Sunday start, Kansas City will send Jakob Junis to the mound. Early on in Summer Camp, Junis was diagnosed with coronavirus and he’s just now coming off the injured list. In 2019, Junis went 9-14 with a 5.24 ERA and 164 strikeouts in 175.1 innings of work overall.
The White Sox are 4-0 in their last four games as a favorite and 4-9 in their last 13 Sunday games. Chicago is 5-1 in their last six games as a road favorite and 9-19 in their last 28 road games versus a right-handed starter.
Meanwhile, the Royals are 18-38 in their last 56 Sunday games and 17-39 in their last 56 games as an underdog. Kansas City is 1-4 in their last five overall and 1-4 in their last five versus the American League Central.
Pick: Probably worth going Royals here. Neither starting pitcher is a huge obstacle on paper for the opposing offenses, so we could see some big run totals here if the bats get going. It may take Junis a few innings to get the rust shaken off, but I like him for a decent outing here. This one should be close, but I like Kansas City to eke out a victory.
