The Chicago Cubs and the Kansas City Royals meet in MLB action from Kauffman Stadium on Thursday night.
The Chicago Cubs will look to build off of a 6-1 win over the Royals on Wednesday. Javier Baez led the charge for the Cubs, going 2 for 4 with two RBIs while Willson Contreras and Victor Caratini each had an RBI as well in the victory for the Cubbies. Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo each chipped in a pair of hits while Ian Happ added a base hit as well to finish off Chicago’s offense in victory. Yu Darvish got the win to improve to 2-1 after allowing just one run on five hits while striking out four over seven innings of work. Tyler Chatwood will start this one and is 2-0 with a 0.71 ERA and 19 strikeouts this season. In his career, Chatwood is 0-1 with a 6.23 ERA and 8 strikeouts against Kansas City, but he hasn’t faced the Royals since 2011.
The Kansas City Royals will look to rebound after dropping Wednesday’s matchup against Chicago. Maikel Franco had a double while Whit Merrifield, Salvador Perez, Ryan McBroom and Nicky Lopez each had a base hit as the Royals cranked out just five hits as a team in the losing effort. Kris Bubic took the loss after allowing two earned runs on four hits while striking out six over six innings of work. Brad Keller will start this one, making his season debut after going 7-14 with a 4.19 ERA and 122 strikeouts last season. This will be Keller’s second career start against the Cubs.
Chicago is 5-0 in their last 5 games overall and 4-1 in their last 5 games against the AL Central while the over is 7-0 in their last 7 road games. Kansas City is 1-4 in their last 5 interleague games and 17-42 in their last 59 games as an underdog while the over is 5-1 in their last 6 Thursday games. Chicago is 6-1 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams.
If you had told me early on that Chatwood would be dealing ace-type numbers for the Cubs so far, I’d have thought you were crazy, but it’s true, as his ERA is well under one with 19 strikeouts up to this point. On the other hand, you could argue that Keller’s been Kansas City’s best or second best pitcher over the last two years, and he’s capable of keeping the Cubs in check somewhat by Kansas City’s standards. I think a lower-scoring game is on the cards here, so I’ll side with the under as my free pick for this game, but my stronger play is on the side and I have it available as a premium pick that you can find here.
