The Miami Marlins and the New York Mets meet Sunday in MLB action from Citi Field.
This will be the final installment of a three-game weekend set between these teams. In the series opener on Friday, the Marlins eked out a 4-3 win. On Saturday, the Mets evened it up with an 8-4 victory. Check back all season long for free MLB picks and MLB predictions at Sports Chat Place.
The Marlins had an early 1-0 lead going into the second inning on Saturday, but saw that disappear over the next couple of frames. The good news is that three Marlins players had two hits apiece. The bad news is that starter Daniel Castano coughed up four earned in 4.1 frames.
For the Sunday starting pitcher role, the Marlins will send out Pablo Lopez. In 2019, Lopez went 5-8 with a 5.09 ERA and 95 strikeouts in 111.1 innings of work. He was great in his lone start this year, picking up a win with zero earned and seven strikeouts in 5.0 innings.
Over on the Mets’ side, some timely hitting enabled the team to power out a win on Saturday. The runs came mostly on three homers, and JD Davis finished with a three-run blast, four RBI, two hits and two runs. Starter David Peterson went 5.0 innings with two earned in a win.
For Sunday’s starting role, New York is going with Jacob deGrom. Last season, deGrom managed an 11-8 mark with a 2.43 ERA and 255 strikeouts in 204.0 innings. In his three starts so far during 2020, deGrom has a 1-0 record with a 2.12 ERA and 22 Ks in 17.0 innings of work.
The Marlins are 30-64 in their last 94 games versus the National League East and 37-81 in their last 118 road games. Miami is 36-81 in their last 117 road games as an underdog and 15-36 in their last 51 games versus a right-handed starter.
Meanwhile, the Mets are 41-18 in their last 59 games as a right-handed starter and 39-19 in their last 58 games as a favorite. New York is 2-6 in their last eight Sunday games and the over is 4-1-1 in their last six during game three of a series.
Pick: Going Marlins. I was going to take the Mets here, but then I saw the line. It’s a bit of a value play, but should have a good shot. Lopez is really starting to expand his talents at the MLB level, and his seven strikeouts during five innings in his first start is impressive. Then there’s deGrom, who went 5-1 with a 2.37 ERA and 46 strikeouts in six starts against Miami last year. Relying on the Mets offense is tricky, so at this number I’m going Marlins.
