The New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays meet in an AL East division matchup from Tropicana Field on Sunday.
The New York Yankees will look to bounce back after failing to sweep the double-header on Saturday, taking game one by a final count of 8-4 before losing game two by a score of 5-3. In game one, Gio Urshela went 2 for 2 with a double and three RBIs while Aaron Judge and Mike Ford each had a home run and two RBIs and Giancarlo Stanton added a solo homer as well in the victory. Gerrit Gole gave up three runs on six hits while striking out 10 over 4.2 innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Chad Green got the win to improve to 2-0 on the year in relief. In game two, DJ LeMahieu had two RBIs while Luke Voit added an RBI to finish off New York’s scoring and Erik Kratz added a double as well. Michael King took the loss after allowing three runs on one hit while striking out four over 3.2 innings of work. James Paxton will start this one and is 0-1 with a 13.50 ERA and 5 strikeouts this season. In his career, Paxton is 3-1 with a 3.19 ERA and 36 strikeouts against Tampa Bay.
The Tampa Bay Rays will look to build off of a split with the Yanks in Saturday’s double-header. In game one, Jose Martinez had a two-run home run while Ji-Man Choi had a pair of doubles with an RBI and Kevin Kiermaier had an RBI as well in the loss. Tyler Glasnow took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits while striking out five over 2.2 innings of work. In game two, Austin Meadows had a double and two RBIs while Kevan Smith had a pair of RBIs and Yoshi Tsutsugo had an RBI as well in the victory. Peter Fairbanks got the win in relief to improve to 2-1 while Nick Anderson picked up his 2nd save of the season. Charlie Morton will start this one and is 1-1 with a 5.52 ERA and 16 strikeouts this season. In his career, Morton is 4-2 with a 3.97 ERA and 65 strikeouts against the Yankees.
New York is 1-5 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams in Tampa Bay while the under is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams.
The low line with the Yankees based on name brand alone is tempting, but Paxton hasn’t been very good in his time as a Yankee if we’re being honest and that’s carried over to this season as well. Morton is getting up there in age, but he’s still a quality arm and has been consistent for the most part no matter where he plays. The Rays also have what it takes to hang with the Yankees and I’m not getting sucked into backing the Yankees just because of the cheap price. Give me Tampa Bay here.
