Baltimore Orioles vs. Boston Red Sox – 8/22/20 MLB Pick, Odds, and Prediction

2020-08-22 19:35:00 EDT

The Boston Red Sox and the Baltimore Orioles meet in an AL East division matchup from Camden Yards on Saturday.

The Boston Red Sox will look to rebound from an 8-5 win over Baltimore in their last outing. Rafael Devers led the charge for Boston with a three-run home run while J.D. Martinez and Michael Chavis each had two RBIs with Martinez’s runs coming on a home run in the 3rd inning. Xander Bogaerts added a solo home run to round out Boston’s scoring as a team in the winning effort while Alex Verdugo went 2 for 4 with a double. Kevin Pillar, Christian Vazquez, and Jose Peraza all had base hits as well to finish off Boston’s offense as a team in the victory. Colten Brewer threw four shutout innings, giving up just three hits and striking out a pair, not factoring in the decision. Darwinzon Hernandez got the win to improve to 1-0 on the year in relief. Matt Barnes closed out the 9th for his 1st save of the season. Martin Perez will start here and is 2-3 with a 4.07 ERA and 17 strikeouts this season. In his career, Perez is 4-5 with a 5.19 ERA and 37 strikeouts against the Orioles.

The Baltimore Orioles will try to bounce back after their loss to Boston on Friday. All of Baltimore’s damage on the scoreboard was done via the long ball, as Chance Sisco belted a three-run home run while Pat Valaika and Cedric Mullins each had a solo home run with Mullins going 3 for 4 at the dish in the loss. Renato Nunez, Pedro Severino and Anthony Santander all had base hits as well to finish off the offense for Baltimore in the victory. John Means ended up with the loss, falling to 0-2 after allowing three runs on four hits over three innings of work. Alex Cobb will start here and is 1-2 with a 3.76 ERA and 21 strikeouts this season. In his career, Cobb is 8-6 with a 3.73 ERA and 74 strikeouts against Boston.

Boston is 2-9 in their last 11 games overall and 2-8 in their last 10 road games while the under is 5-0-1 in their last 6 games as a favorite. Baltimore is 20-49 in their last 69 games within the division and 5-12 in their last 17 games against a left-handed starter while the over is 11-2-2 in their last 15 games as a home underdog. The under is 3-1-1 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.

I get why Boston is favored as they’ve looked like the better team in the first couple of games in this series. However, Cobb’s already shut the Red Sox down once this season and even against Baltimore, it still feels wrong laying juice on the road with the Red Sox. Perez has had a history of being teed off on by the Orioles in the past and I just think this seems like a decent rebound spot for Baltimore. Give me the Orioles and the plus money here.
