The Kansas City Royals and the St. Louis Cardinals meet Monday in MLB action from Busch Stadium.
This will be the first installment of a three-game set between these teams this week. The Royals just finished off a series versus the Twins over the weekend. Kansas City split the first pair of games (both 7-2 results). In the Sunday rubber match, the Royals were locked in a tight battle but ultimately lost 5-4. As for the Cardinals, they played the the Reds over the weekend. St. Louis lost Friday, but got wins Thursday and Saturday. In the Sunday game, the Cardinals managed to power out a 6-2 victory to take the series 3-1. Check back all season long for free MLB picks and MLB predictions at Sports Chat Place.
The Royals were out-hit 13-9 in the loss Sunday and couldn’t find a lot of effective offense. One standout was Hunter Dozier, who finished 4-for-4 with three runs. Starter Kris Bubic took the loss in a tough outing with 3.1 innings, nine hits, four earned and two walks.
For the Monday game, Kansas City will send Brad Keller out to the mound. So far this season, Keller is 3-0 over three starts, with a clean ERA and 15 strikeouts in 17.2 innings of work. On his career in the MLB, Keller is 19-20 with a 3.48 ERA and 233 Ks in 323.1 innings.
Over on the Cardinals’ side, they had a great offensive showing Sunday, out-hitting Cincinnati 12-3. Veteran catcher Yadier Molina had a 4-for-5 day with two RBI and a run. Starting pitcher Daniel Ponce de Leon went 4.2 innings with three hits, four walks, two strikeouts and two earned runs.
In the Monday starting role, St. Louis is going with Jack Flaherty. In his two starts during 2020, Flaherty has been on a tight leash, logging a 1-0 record with a 3.12 ERA in 8.2 innings with nine strikeouts. In his career, Flaherty is 20-19 with a 3.20 ERA and 442 Ks in 377.1 innings of work.
The Royals are 105-218 in their last 323 games as an underdog and 17-38 in their last 55 Monday games. Kansas City is 10-26 in their last 36 versus the National League Central and the under is 5-1-1 in their last seven during game one of a series.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals are 21-7 in their last 28 during game one of a series and 22-9 in their last 28 during game one of a series. St. Louis is 52-25 in their last 77 Monday games and the over is 4-1 in their last five Monday games.
Pick: Going KC here; they’re worth a shot on a value pick I think. Keller has been awesome so far this season, racking up wins in each of his starts so far. He’s coming off a 6.2-inning effort with just three hits and three walks given up. As for Flaherty, he should be effective here but probably won’t stay in the game for more than a couple innings as the Cards work his pitch count back up. If Keller is on, this is a great win opportunity for the Royals.
