The Toronto Blue Jays and the Tampa Bay Rays meet Monday in MLB action from Tropicana Field.
This will be the fourth and final matchup of the four-game weekend set between these American League East teams. Each squad won one of the first two, 6-5 Friday for Toronto and 2-1 Saturday for Tampa. In the Sunday game three, we had yet another tight, one-run game as Tampa Bay escaped 5-4 to go up 2-1 in the series. Toronto was out-hit 9-6 in the loss on Sunday, and were losing 5-2 before a two-run eighth inning that fell just short. Lourdes Gurriel posted a two-run homer there, and Jacob Waguespack coughed up three hits and two earned over 1.2 innings.
For the Monday game, the Blue Jays will send Tanner Roark to the mound for the start. Across his four starts this season, Roark has a 2-1 record with a 4.76 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 17.0 innings. During his MLB career, Roark is 76-65 with a 3.72 ERA and 905 Ks in 1117.1 innings of work.
Over on the Tampa Bay side, starting pitcher Josh Fleming was able to get the Sunday win, posting 5.0 innings, four hits and two earned. Yandy Diaz was the top hitter for the Rays, going 2-for-2 with two walks. He’s now hitting .315 on the year.
For Monday’s starting outing, the Rays are going with lefty Blake Snell. Over his five starts this season, Snell is 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 18.0 innings. Across his MLB career, Snell holds a 40-28 record with a 3.23 ERA and 608 Ks in 524.0 innings total.
The Blue Jays are 6-1 in their last seven Monday games and 9-19 in their last 28 games as a road underdog. Toronto is 18-40 in their last 58 road games versus a left-handed starter and the over is 10-3-1 in their last 14 Monday games.
Meanwhile, Tampa Bay is 5-1 in their last six during game four of a series and 21-5 in their last 26 Monday games. The over is 12-3-2 in the Rays’ last 17 Monday games and they’re 36-16 in their last 52 games as a home favorite.
Pick: Going with the Rays. Snell has been pretty solid this season, and he’s coign off three runs in five innings in a win versus the Yankees his last time out. As for Roark, the Blue Jays are going to need him to go five or six innings in this one, as the bullpen is pretty gassed from the weekend. I’m not sure Toronto will be able to match their relievers up against the Rays, so Tampa is probably in a better position for a win here.
