The New York Yankees and the Atlanta Braves meet Wednesday in MLB action from SunTrust Park.
This will be the first installment of a Wednesday doubleheader. The Tuesday matchup was rained out.
It’s been a long time since the Yankees have played. Their weekend series versus the Mets was postponed due to positive virus tests and the Yankees were swept by the Rays last week in their most recent series. As for Atlanta, they played the Phillies over the weekend. The Braves took the first two games of that set but fell 5-4 on Sunday. New York has some solid offensive performers this season so far, but other guys still need to get going (and back from injury). Luke Voit is hitting well, with a .311 BA, 10 homers, 20 RBI and 16 runs. Gio Urshela has also been heating up with a .256 average, 15 runs, five homers and 18 RBI. Guys like Gleyber Torres (.231 BA), Gary Sanchez (.132 BA) and Brett Gardner (.164 BA) are still looking for sustained success in 2020, however.
For the Monday start, New York will send out Gerrit Cole in the starting role. Over his six starts this season so far, Cole is 4-0 with a 2.75 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 36.0 innings of work. In his MLB career, Cole has notched a 98-52 record with a 3.20 ERA and 1380 strikeouts in 1231.0 frames overall.
Over on the Braves’ side, they’ve gotten some pretty good hitting averages across their lineup so far, but they’ve got spots to clean up offensively as well. Freddie Freeman leads the way with a .302 BA over 28 games, notching 22 runs, 29 hits, 17 RBI and four home runs. Marcell Ozuna leads the team on 19 RBI, and Travis d’Arnaud has four homers and 17 RBI himself.
In the Tuesday game, the Braves will send out RHP Ian Anderson in his Major-League debut. Anderson was the third overall pick in the 2016 MLB Draft, and is ranked as the Braves’ number-three prospect.
The Yankees are 8-2 in their last 10 during game one of a series and 5-2 in their last seven road games as a favorite. New York is 5-2 in the last seven interleague games and 1-4 in their last five road games.
Meanwhile, the Braves are 9-1 in their last 10 interleague home games and 6-2 in the last eight games as a home underdog. Atlanta is 5-2 in their last seven overall and 47-22 in their last 69 home games.
Pick: I’m going to go with the Yankees here. Granted, New York looked flat and uninspired during the Tampa Bay series, and I’m sure they’re itching to get back to the field. Cole is a good starter to trot out here; he should be able to keep the Braves at bay while New York figures out who’s going to step up and cover the injured superstars’ production. A few key hits should be enough for the Yankees to break out front in this one.
