The Baltimore Orioles and the Tampa Bay Rays meet Thursday in MLB action from Tropicana Field.
This will be the third and final installment in the series between these American League East teams this week. In game one, the Rays managed a 4-2 win. On Wednesday, Baltimore jumped out to an early lead, but the Rays came back to win another tight one 4-3. Check back all season long for free MLB picks and MLB predictions at Sports Chat Place.
The Orioles managed to out-hit Tampa Bay 8-5 on Wednesday, but could only score once after the first inning. Pat Valaika was the only Baltimore player with an extra base hit there—a double. Starting pitcher Asher Wojciechowski went 4.0 innings with four hits, three walks, three Ks and three earned.
For the Thursday starting role, Baltimore will send out John Means. Over his four starts this season, Means is 0-2 with a 10.13 ERA and eight strikeouts in 10.2 innings. In his career, Means is 12-13 with a 4.21 ERA and 133 strikeouts in 169.0 innings total.
Over on the Rays’ side, Trevor Richards set a nice tempo as the starting pitcher on Wednesday, going 4.1 innings with six hits, two walks and no earned. Brandon Lowe and Michael Perez each hit solo home runs in that one as part of five team hits.
For the Thursday starting pitcher role, Tampa Bay is going with Ryan Yarbrough. In his six starts this season, Yarbrough is 0-2 with a 4.45 ERA and 21 Ks in 30.1 innings. Across his career, Yarbrough is 27-14 with a 4.06 ERA and 266 strikeouts in 319.1 innings total.
The Orioles are 34-72 in their last 106 during game three of a series and 119-257 in their last 376 overall. Baltimore is 14-37 in their last 51 Thursday games and 22-51 in the last 73 versus the American League East.
Meanwhile, the Rays are 37-17 in their last 54 versus the American League East and 49-23 in their last 72 games as a favorite. the over is 15-5-1 in Tampa Bay’s last 21 during game three of a series and they’re 36-15 in their last 51 games as a home favorite.
Pick: Sticking with the Rays here. Means is still building back up to full strength, and it’s been a rocky road for him. He’s coughed up 12 runs in 10.2 innings so far, and Means will probably be limited to 60 or 70 pitches in this one. As for Yarbrough, he hasn’t quite been sharp himself, and gave up four runs in 6.1 innings to the Blue Jays his last time up. Still, I’ve got more confidence in Tampa as a team this season than I do most other MLB squads. The pen can pick up the slack if things go south.
