New York Yankees vs. New York Mets Game 1 – 8/28/20 MLB Pick, Odds, and Prediction

2020-08-28 16:05:00 EDT

The New York Mets and the New York Yankees meet Friday in MLB action from Yankee Stadium.

This will be the first edition of an intense five-game weekend for these teams, and the first game in a Friday doubleheader. The Mets are coming off a series versus the Marlins this week. New York lost the first two games but won 5-4 Wednesday. The Thursday game was postponed. As for the Yankees, they played the Braves in a Wednesday doubleheader. The Yanks continued their slide in those games, losing 5-1 and 2-1. New York has lost five straight. Check back all season long for free MLB picks and MLB predictions at Sports Chat Place.

The Mets have a few solid hitters at their disposal this season. Dominic Smith leads the team on 22 RBI with six homers, 11 runs and a .315 average, and Michael Conforto is doing well on a .324 batting average, five homers, 14 RBI and 20 runs himself.

For the Friday game one start, the Mets will send out Michael Wacha. In his three starts so far this year, Wacha is 1-2 with a 6.43 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 14.0 innings. On his career, Wacha is 60-41 with a 3.95 ERA and 777 Ks in 881.2 innings.

Over on the Yankees’ side, they’ve been decimated by injuries lately, and haven’t been able to fill in the production gaps. New York has three runs or fewer in four of their last five games, which is abnormal for the Bombers. The good news is that the team got star Aaron Judge back this week, and he’s much-needed right now. Judge is hitting .292 with 16 runs, 19 hits, nine homers and 20 RBI in 65 at-bats.

For Friday’s series opener, the Yankees are going with Jordan Montgomery in the start. In his four starts so far this year, Montgomery is 2-1 with a 4.66 ERA and 14 Ks in 19.1 innings. Across his MLB career, Montgomery is 13-8 with a 3.98 ERA and 186 Ks in 206.0 innings.

The Mets are 5-0 in their last five interleague games versus a team with a winning record and 10-1 in the last 11 interleague road games. The Mets are 5-1 in their last six interleague games as an underdog and 4-1 in their last five interleague road games versus a left-handed starter.

Meanwhile, the Yankees are 5-1 in their last six Friday games and 4-1 in their last five interleague home games. The Yankees are 65-23 in their last 88 home games and 8-3 in the last 11 during game one of a series.

Pick: I still like the Yankees, but way less than I used to. Nothing has been going right for the Bronx Bombers over the last five games, as star hitters like DJ LeMahieu, Gleyber Torres and Giancarlo Stanton are out of the lineup with injuries. The supposedly talented bullpen hasn’t fared very well lately either, and blew a lead in the last game. If the Yankees play to their capabilities (which they haven’t been doing lately), they’ll win here easily. If not, they’ll continue to struggle. You wouldn’t be crazy for taking the Mets on a value pick here.
