Philadelphia Phillies vs. Washington Nationals – 9/1/20 MLB Pick, Odds, and Prediction

2020-09-01 19:05:00 EDT

The Washington Nationals and the Philadelphia Phillies meet Tuesday in MLB action from Citizens Bank Park.

This will be the first matchup in a four-game series this week between these teams. In the series opener on Monday, the Phillies were able to jump out to a 6-0 lead after four innings and held on for an 8-6 win to take an early lead in the set. The Nationals didn’t get off to a great start in the Monday game, coughing up six runs over the first four frames. Washington provided a half-dozen runs of their own in the next five innings, but couldn’t catch Philly despite out-hitting them 11-7. Trea Turner had a nice night with four hits and three runs with a solo homer, and Juan Soto slapped two homers with four RBI.
For the Tuesday starting pitcher role, the Nationals are sending out Patrick Corbin. In six starts this year, Corbin has a 2-2 record with a 3.82 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 35.1 innings of work. Over his MLB career, Corbin has a 72-63 record with a 3.80 ERA and 1169 Ks in 1183.0 frames.

Over on the Phillies’ side, they got a nice start from Spencer Howard on Monday; he went 5.0 innings with five hits, two earned, two walks and four strikeouts. Rhys Hoskins also had a good outing on two hits, three RBI and a solo home run.

In the starting pitcher role Tuesday, the Phillies are going with Aaron Nola. In six starts this year, Nola is 3-2 with a 3.00 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 36.0 innings. Over his MLB career, Nola is 56-37 with a 3.47 ERA and 874 strikeouts in 807.1 innings total.

The Nationals are 19-7 in their last 26 Tuesday games and 16-7 in their last 23 road games. Washington is 6-20 in their last 26 games versus a right-handed starter and the under is 3-1-1 in their last five Tuesday games.

Meanwhile, the Phillies are 15-5 in their last 20 Tuesday games and the over is 3-0-1 in their last four Tuesday games. The over is 4-1 in Philadelphia’s last five games versus a left-handed starter and the under is 6-2 in the last eight during game two of a series.

Pick: I’m leaning Phillies here, but it’s close. Both starting pitchers are coming off nice outings against the same opposing teams. Corbin went six innings with two runs and three strikeouts on August 26, and Nola went seven innings with two runs in a win on Wednesday, thiteming a season-high 113 pitches. I like both guys to have solid games again here, with the Phillies breaking through in the later innings versus the Nats bullpen. Looks like a tight, lower-scoring game on paper.
