The Washington Nationals and the Philadelphia Phillies meet Thursday in MLB action from Citizens Bank Park.
This will be the final matchup in a four-game series between these teams this week. The Phillies took the first two games, 8-6 on Monday and 6-0 in Tuesday. In the Wednesday game three, Philadelphia made it three in a row with a 3-0 win. Check back all season long for free MLB picks and MLB predictions at Sports Chat Place.
The Nationals continued their downhill slide on Wednesday, getting out-hit 7-4 in the loss. No Washington player had more than one knock, and starting pitcher Max Scherzer took the loss on 6.0 innings, seven hits, three earned runs, three walks, six strikeouts and a homer allowed.
For the Thursday starting pitcher slot, the Nationals are going with Anibal Sanchez. Over six starts this season, Sanchez has a 6.90 ERA and a 1-4 record while striking out 23 batters in 30.0 innings. On his career, Sanchez is 109-112 with a 4.02 ERA and 1706 Ks in 1925.1 frames total.
Over on the Phillies’ side, Zack Wheeler had a nice outing Wednesday in the win with 6.2 innings, three hits, no earned, two walks and six strikeouts. Wheeler is 4-0 on the year. Neil Walker had a good game on three hits and two RBI as well.
For Thursday’s starting pitcher role, the Phillies are sending out Zach Eflin. This year Eflin is 2-1 over five starts with 37 Ks in 26.1 innings. Eflin is a career 4.69 pitcher with a 27-32 record and 355 Ks in 445.1 innings of work.
The Nationals are 36-17 in their last 53 versus a team with a winning record and 6-22 in their last 28 games versus a right-handed starter. The over is 4-0 in Washington’s last four during game four of a series and 17-4 in their last 21 road games.
Meanwhile, the Phillies are 1-5 in their last six Thursday games and the over is 4-1-2 in their last seven Thursday games. Philadelphia is 5-1 in their last six games with the total set at 9.0-10.5 and the over is 4-1-2 in their last seven Thursday games.
Pick: I’m sticking with the Phillies here. Granted, Sanchez hasn’t been horrible against the Phillies. He went 1-2 in five starts versus Philadelphia in 2019, posting a 3.95 ERA. As for Eflin, he’s made some tweaks to his pitching arsenal that should come in handy down the road. Eflin is throwing a lot more curveballs these days, and he struck out six batters on that pitch on Saturday versus Atlanta. We can expect to see a healthy dose of curves here, and if the Nats can’t adjust they’ll be in trouble early.
