Tampa Bay Rays vs. Miami Marlins – 9/5/20 MLB Pick, Odds, and Prediction

2020-09-05 18:40:00 EDT

The Miami Marlins and the Tampa Bay Rays meet Saturday in MLB action from Tropicana Field.

This will be game two in a three-game weekend set between these teams. In the series opener on Friday, the Rays rode a big four-run fourth inning on the way to a tight 5-4 win. Check back all season long for free MLB picks and MLB predictions at Sports Chat Place.

The Marlins out-hit the Rays 8-6 on Friday, but couldn’t cash in on their opportunities. Miami was up 2-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth and after that inning they’d never see the lead again. Jesus Aguilar and Corey Dickerson each had solo home runs in that one, and starting pitcher Pablo Lopez managed 4.0 innings with five earned, five hits, two walks and six strikeouts.

For the Saturday starting pitcher role, Miami is sending out Sandy Alcantara. In his two starts this season, Alcantara is 1-1 with a 5.06 ERA and nine strikeouts in 10.2 innings of work. On his MLB career, Alcantara is 9-18 with a 3.88 ERA and 200 strikeouts in 250.1 innings total.

Over on the Rays’ side, they got a win out of starting pitcher Josh Fleming on Friday, with 5.0 innings, seven hits, four earned, two strikeouts and two homers allowed. DH Yoshi Tsutugo posted a solo homer with two hits, two runs and two walks in a nice offensive outing.

In the starting pitcher role on Saturday, Tampa Bay will go with Blake Snell. In his seven starts this season, Snell is 3-0 with a 3.14 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 28.2 innings of work. Over his MLB career, Snell is 41-28 with a 3.23 ERA and 622 Ks in 534.2 innings total.

The Marlins are 42-87 in their last 128 games as a road underdog and 8-18 in their last 26 games on turf. Miami is 21-49 in their last 70 during game two of a series and 18-42 during their last 60 games versus a team with a winning record.
Meanwhile, the Rays are 4-0 in their last four Saturday games and 6-1 in their last seven during game two of a series. Tampa Bay is 19-7 in their last 26 interleague games as a favorite and 37-15 in their last 52 games as a home favorite.

Pick: Going Rays here. Snell is coming off an outing versus the Marlins in his last start. He threw five innings with five strikeouts and two runs in that one, and has really done well in 2020 so far. Alcantara is also coming off a start versus the Rays, and he coughed up eight runs (five earned) over four innings. Regardless, Tampa Bay has been quite the juggernaut this season and has great pitching across the board. I don’t see Miami getting ahead here at all.
