Philadelphia Phillies vs. New York Mets – 9/17/20 MLB Pick, Odds, and Prediction

2020-09-17 19:05:00 EDT

The New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies meet Thursday in MLB action from Citizens Bank Park.

This will be the third and final matchup of a three-game series between these teams this week. The Phillies took game one 4-1 on Tuesday. In the Wednesday game two, we had a pretty tight matchup as New York eventually eked out a 5-4 win to even it up at one game apiece. The Mets were out-hit 11-10 in the Wednesday victory, but made their knocks count with five runs. Leading the offense in that one was JD Davis with a two-run homer, three hits, three RBI and two runs. Starting pitcher Jacob deGrom went 2.0 innings with four hits and three earned runs.

For the Thursday starting pitcher role, the Mets are bringing out Seth Lugo. In his 13 games (four starts) this season, Lugo has a 2-3 record, a 2.63 ERA, three saves and 36 strikeouts in 27.1 innings. On his MLB career, Lugo is 24-18 with a 3.22 ERA and 373 Ks in 374.0 innings.

Over on the Phillies’ side, Wednesday starter Zack Wheeler posted 7.1 innings with three earned runs and two strikeouts in a no-decision. Jean Segura was the offensive standout on four hits, two runs and a solo homer.

For the Thursday game, Philadelphia’s starting pitcher will be Aaron Nola. Over nine games this season Nola is 5-3 with a 2.40 ERA and 77 strikeouts in 56.1 innings of work. Across his MLB career, Nola is 58-38 with a 3.41 ERA and 903 Ks in 827.2 innings total.

The Mets are 7-3 in their last 10 Thursday games and 2-5 in their last seven games overall. New York is 14-37 in their last 51 games as a road underdog and the under is 7-3 in their last 10 games as a road underdog.

Meanwhile, the Phillies are 3-12 in their last 15 during game three of a series and 1-4 in their last five Thursday games. Philadelphia is 11-3 in the last 14 games as a favorite and the over is 6-1-2 in their last nine Thursday games.

Pick: I’m sticking with the Mets. This is going to be a pretty darn great starting pitching matchup, though. Nola holds a 1.65 ERA over his past four starts and is going to be a key weapon as the Phillies try to battle their way into the postseason. As for Lugo, he’s got a 2.65 ERA since he entered the rotation and makes a nice one-two punch behind Jacob deGrom. The New York offense needs to show up and stay consistent but I think the Mets have a good shot here.
