The St. Louis Cardinals and the Kansas City Royals meet in MLB action from Kauffman Stadium on Tuesday.
The St. Louis Cardinals will look to rebound after a 4-1 loss to the Royals on Monday. Matt Carpenter’s solo homer in the 2nd was the lone run that the Cards would plate in the losing effort as Yadier Molina went 2 for 4 at the dish and Tommy Edman Paul Goldschmidt and Dexter Fowler each had base hits as well as St. Louis had just six hits as a team in the losing effort. Adam Wainwright took the loss, falling to 5-2 on the year after allowing three runs on six hits with seven strikeouts over 5.2 innings of work. Austin Gomber will start here and is 0-1 with a 2.37 ERA and 21 strikeouts this season. This will be Gomber’s second career start against the Royals.
The Kansas City Royals will look to build on their victory over St. Louis on Monday.
Maikel Franco went 2 for 3 with two RBIs while Jorge Soler had a double and an RBI and Alex Gordon added an RBI as well to finish off Kansas City’s scoring as a team in the victory. Hunter Dozier added a double and Whit Merrifield had a 2 for 4 day at the dish while Adalberto Mondesi and Salvador Perez each had base hits as well. Carlos Hernandez allowed one run on four hits while striking out four over 3.2 innings in the start, not factoring in the decision. Jason Staumont got the win to improve to 2-1 while Greg Holland closed out the 9th for his 6th save. Brady Singer will start here and is 3-4 with a 4.14 ERA and 52 strikeouts this season. This will be Singer’s first career start against St. Louis.
St. Louis is 5-2 in their last 7 games as a road favorite and 4-1 in their last 5 games overall while the over is 5-1 in their last 6 games against the AL Central. Kansas City is 4-0 in their last 4 home games and 21-45 in their last 66 games as a home underdog while the under is 6-0 in their last 6 games against a left-handed starter.
Monday night’s opener was a really low-scoring affair, and to be honest, I’m thinking we see more of the same on Tuesday. These are still two of the lower scoring teams in the majors and Gomber’s pitcher well in a small sample size against the Royals. I just think we’re in for a duel here, so I’ll side with the under as my free pick for this game but my stronger play is on the side and I have that available as a premium pick that you can find here.
