MLB Picks: Houston Astros vs. Texas Rangers 9/27/20

2020-09-27 15:05:00 EDT

The Houston Astros and the Texas Rangers meet Sunday in MLB action from Globe Life Field.

This will be the final installment of a four-game weekend MLB series between the Astros and Rangers. After splitting the first two games, on Saturday the Rangers exploded for five runs in the seventh inning on the way to a 6-1 win. The Astros had seven hits to the Rangers’ 11 in the Saturday loss, but couldn’t get much going on the scoreboard. Kyle Tucker was the only Houston player with two hits, and Lance McCullers put up 4.0 innings as the starter with two hits, two walks, nine Ks and no earned.

For the Sunday matchup, the Astros will go with Chase De Jong in the starting role. This year in two games (one start) without a decision, De Jong has a 14.73 ERA with three strikeouts in 3.2 innings.  Over his MLB career, De Jong is 1-4 with a 6.57 ERA and 29 Ks in 50.2 innings.

Over on the Rangers’ side, Saturday starting pitcher Kyle Gibson put up 6.0 innings with six hits, no earned, one walk and four strikeouts in a no-decision. Offensively, Jeff Mathis had the big swing in the seventh with a three-run homer.

In the Sunday starting pitcher role, the Rangers are going with Jordan Lyles. This season in 11 games (eight starts), Lyles is 1-6 with a 7.08 ERA and 32 Ks in 54.2 innings. IN his MLB career, Lyles is 44-66 with a 5.22 ERA and 728 Ks in 964.1 innings.

The Astros are 6-1 in their last seven games following a loss and 21-7 in their last 28 Sunday games. Houston is 136-66 in their last 202 games as a favorite and 5-13 in their last 18 versus the American League West.

Meanwhile, the Rangers are 17-35 in their last 52 during game four of a series and 19-41 in their last 60 games as an underdog. Texas is 11-29 in their last 40 overall and 2-5 in their last seven versus the AL West.

Pick: I’m going to take a value-pick shot on the Rangers here . Lyles has two games and one start versus the Astros this season, and he’s got a 3.75 ERA in those appearances. He’s also 1-1 with a 3.10 ERA in four career games versus Houston. Seems Lyles may be able to keep the Astros in check in this one. De Jong’s numbers—though it’s a small sample size—don’t inspire much confidence either.
