The New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays meet Monday in MLB Division Series action from Petco Park.
This will be Game 1 in a best-of-five postseason set between the Yankees and Rays this week. New York managed to take out the Indians in their Wild Card round, winning 12-3 and 10-9 for a sweep. As for the Rays, they haven’t lost in the playoffs yet either, beating Toronto in the Wild Card 3-1 and 8-2 in two games. The Yankees posted a dominant victory in Game 1 versus the Indians, and the New York offense started to show signs of emerging from its slumber. Gleyber Torres was the star of that game, going 4-for-4 with three RBI and three runs. Brett Gardner also had a nice outing with three hits and two runs alongside three RBI.
Game 2 in the Indians series was a much closer call, and New York was down 4-0 after the first inning. The Yankees offense continued to chip away and exchange leads with Cleveland until a 10-9 result finally moved New York to the Division Series. Gio Urshela was the only Yankee with more than one hit there, logging a grand slam with two hits and two runs.
Over on the Rays’ side, they were able to use their pitching skills to hold Toronto to just three runs in two games. It wasn’t exactly an offensive explosion, though; Bo Bichette had the only RBI in Game 1, and Lourdes Gurriel added a 2-for-4 outing as the only Rays player with multiple knocks.
Game 2 was a little easier for the Rays, especially after a six-run second inning. Randy Arozarena had a great game there, with three hits, two runs and an RBI. Hunter Renfroe added four more RBI, and Mike Zunino had two hits with two RBI in the 8-2 win over the Blue Jays back on Wednesday.
The Yankees are 13-3 in their last 16 playoff games as a favorite and 10-3 in their last 13 games after a win. New York is 14-6 in their last 20 Monday games and 7-3 in their last 10 Divisional Playoff games.
Meanwhile, the Rays are 10-2 in their last 12 games as an underdog and 8-1 in their last nine after an off day. Tampa Bay is 23-8 in their last 31 during game one of a series and 38-14 in their last 52 overall.
Pick: Going Rays here. This matchup is one of the best in the Divisional Round, as the Yankees and Rays really don’t like each other. Tampa Bay has been rolling along all season, winning 40 games and dominating the matchups versus New York. The Rays pitching has flummoxed the Yankees hitters all year, and even if Cole keeps this one close the New York bullpen has been a crapshoot in 2020. Should be an excellent game decided in the later innings.
