The Arizona Diamondbacks and the San Diego Padres meet in an NL West division matchup in MLB action from Petco Park on Friday night.
The Arizona Diamondbacks will be out to bounce back from an 8-7 loss to the Padres on Asdrubal Cabrera led the way with three RBIs on 2 for 5 at the dish with a home run while Tim Locastro had a two-run home run. Stephen Vogt and Ketel Marte each had a solo home run with Marte going 4 for 5 at the dish with a double. Pavin Smith and Madison Bumgarner each had a double while Christian Walker and Carson Kelly each had a base hit as well to cap off Arizona’s offense in the defeat. Bumgarner allowed six runs on seven hits with six strikeouts over four innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Alex Young ended up with the loss, falling to 0-1 with one run allowed over 1.1 innings of relief. Merrill Kelly will start this one and was 3-2 with a 2.59 ERA and 29 strikeouts last season. In his career, Kelly is 5-1 with a 2.75 ERA and 37 strikeouts against San Diego.
The San Diego Padres will look to build on their win over the D-Backs last time out. Eric Hosmer led the way, going 3 for 4 with a home run, a double and three RBIs while Vic Caratini added a pair of hits and three RBIs as well. Wil Myers chipped in a solo home run and Jurickson Profar added an RBI as well to cap off the scoring for the Padres in the winning effort. Jake Cronenworth went 2 for 2 with a triple while Tommy Pham and Fernando Tatis Jr. each had a base hit to finish off the offense for the Padres in the win. Yu Darvish allowed four earned runs on eight hits with six strikeouts over 4.2 innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Emilio Pagan got the win to improve to 1-0 while Mark Melancon picked up his first save of the season by closing out the 9th. Blake Snell will make his Padres debut here and was 4-2 with a 3.24 ERA and 63 strikeouts for Tampa Bay last season. This will be Snell’s second career start against San Diego.
Arizona is 5-2 in their last 7 games overall and 7-19 in their last 26 road games while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 games overall. San Diego is 23-7 in their last 30 games as a home favorite and 18-8 in their last 26 home games while the under is 6-1-1 in their last 8 games following a win. Arizona is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
It will be interesting to see what becomes of both starters outings on the mound, as Kelly is coming back from a Thoracic Outlet issue while owning solid numbers against San Diego while Snell had another fantastic year last year. Instead, I’m going to side with the under here as I think both pitchers buckle down here and think that we sneak in under the number so give me the under as my free pick for this game. My stronger play is on the side though and I have that available as a premium pick that you can find here.
