The Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs meet Saturday in MLB action at Wrigley Field.
The Pittsburgh Pirates jumped on the Cubs early in their season opener and put together five runs and nine hits in the victory. The Pirates pitching staff also did its thing, allowing just two hits while striking out 13 batters. The Pirates look for their first 2-0 start to a season since 2018. Jacob Stallings leads the Pirates with two hits and one RBI while Adam Frazier and Kevin Newman have combined for four hits and two RBI. Tyler Anderson gets the ball, and he was 4-3 with a 4.37 ERA and 41 strikeouts last season. Anderson is 2-0 with a 4.05 ERA and 23 strikeouts in his career against the Cubs.
The Chicago Cubs watched their offense law an egg in their season opener, coming away with just two hits and striking out 13 times. The Cubs offense has produced a combined three runs in their last three games when you include their playoff games against the Marlins. The Cubs look to avoid their first 0-2 start since 2014, which they ironically lost their first two games to the Pirates. Eric Sogard leads the Cubs with one hit while Anthony Rizzo and Joe Pederson have combined for one hit and two RBI. Jake Arrieta gets the ball, and he was 4-4 with a 5.08 ERA and 32 strikeouts last season. Arrieta is 12-6 with a 2.93 ERA and 136 strikeouts in his career against the Pirates.
The Pirates are 20-48 in their last 68 road games and 24-52 in their last 76 overall. The Cubs are 0-5 in their last 5 home games and 1-4 in their last 5 overall. The under is 6-2-1 in Pirates last 9 overall. The under is 18-8-1 in Cubs last 27 overall. The Pirates are 7-19 in the last 26 meetings in Chicago and 4-0 in the last 4 meetings.
While the Pittsburgh Pirates looked good in their season opener, they need to show me a little more before I can back them with confidence. The Chicago Cubs are due for a breakout offensively and Arrieta has to be trilled to be back in Chicago. For his career at Wrigley, Arrieta is allowing a 2.29 ERA with 382 strikeouts in 384.1 innings. This feels like a game for the Cubs to bounce back. I'll back the Cubs and the RL.
