The St. Louis Cardinals and the Cincinnati Reds meet in an NL Central division matchup in MLB action from the Great American Ballpark on Saturday night.
The St. Louis Cardinals will look to build on their 11-6 win over the Reds on opening day last time out. Dylan Carlson led the Cards with a home run and three RBIs while Tyler O’Neill added a two-run shot and Paul Goldschmidt went 4 for 5 with a pair of doubles and an RBI. Nolan Arenado, Paul DeJong and Yadier Molina each had base hits as well while Tommy Edman chipped in a base hit to finish off St. Louis’ offense as a team in the win. Jack Flaherty was chased early, allowing six runs on six hits while striking out four over 4.1 innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Giovanny Gallegos picked up the win in relief to improve to 1-0 on the year. Adam Wainwright will start for St. Louis here and was 5-3 with a 3.15 ERA and 54 strikeouts for St. Louis last season. In his career, Cincinnati is 10-13 with a 5.12 ERA and 141 strikeouts against Cincinnati.
The Cincinnati Reds will be out to bounce back from a disappointing start to the season last time out. Nick Castellanos led the Reds with a two-run home run and a double, going 3 for 5 at the dish while Eugenio Suarez added a solo home run and Joey Votto and Mike Moustakas each had an RBI as well in the loss. Jesse Winker and Jonathan India each had two hits with a double and Tyler Stephenson added a base knock as well in the losing effort. Luis Castillo took the loss, falling to 0-1 after giving up eight runs on eight hits over 3.1 innings of work. Tyler Mahle will start here and was 2-2 with a 3.59 ERA and 60 strikeouts last season. In his career, Mahle is 1-3 with a 5.45 ERA and 32 strikeouts against St. Louis.
St. Louis is 8-2 in their last 10 division games and 1-5 in their last 6 games following a win while the over is 5-1 in their last 6 road games. Cincinnati is 7-2 in their last 9 division games and 8-3 in their last 11 home games while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games following an off day. St. Louis is 11-5 in the last 16 meetings between these two teams.
I get why the Reds would be worth a look at home, but realistically I’m still not a Mahle fan if we’re being 100% honest. Wainwright’s not the ace-type pitcher of years past, but he’s still a solid arm with a really good lineup behind him, and the Cardinals looked really good last time out so I’ll lay the juice with the Cardinals on the road here.
