The Arizona Diamondbacks and the San Diego Padres meet in an NL West division matchup in MLB action from Petco Park on Saturday night.
The Arizona Diamondbacks will try to bounce back from a 4-2 loss to the Padres on Friday night. Ketel Marte led the D-Backs with a two-run home run and a double while Carson Kelly also had a pair of base hits in the loss. Josh VanMeter, Tim Locastro, Asdrubal Cabrera and David Peralta all had base hits as well in the losing effort for the Diamondbacks. Merrill Kelly took the loss after allowing three earned runs on five hits while striking out four over four innings of work. Caleb Smith will start here and was 0-0 with a 2.57 ERA between Miami and Arizona last year. In his career, Smith is 2-1 with a 2.01 ERA and 24 strikeouts against San Diego.
The San Diego Padres will look to build on Friday’s victory over the Diamondbacks in this one. Eric Hosmer led the way, going 3 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs while Jorge Mateo had a pair of doubles and Jurickson Profar added an RBI as well to finish off the scoring for San Diego in the win. Jake Cronenworth had a double while Luis Campusano, Wil Myers and Tommy Pham each had base hits to finish off San Diego’s offense in the win. Blake Snell threw 4.2 innings of scoreless ball, giving up just four hits while striking out eight, not factoring in the decision. Emilio Pagan got the win to improve to 2-0 while Mark Melancon picked up his 2nd win of the season. Joe Musgrove will start here and was 1-5 with a 3.86 ERA and 55 strikeouts for the Pittsburgh Pirates last season. In his career, Musgrove is 1-1 with a 3.70 ERA and 18 strikeouts against Arizona.
Arizona is 7-19 in their last 26 road games and 6-18 in their last 24 division games while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 games overall. San Diego is 18-8 in their last 26 home games and 23-7 in their last 30 games as a home favorite while the over is 4-0-1 in their last 5 games against a left-handed starter.
I went back and forth on this game, and rather than go the way of a side, I’m going to back the over here. There’s bound to be nerves on both sides, with Smith making his first start in a full year with Arizona after being traded last season at the deadline, while Joe Musgrove makes his debut for his childhood team as he grew up going to Padres games. I think the nerves will be a bit much for the opening game, so give me the over in this one.
