The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Cincinnati Reds meet Wednesday in MLB action from Great American Ball Park.
This will be the third installment of a three-game set between these teams this week. On Monday, the Reds managed a two-run win. In Tuesday’s game, Cincinnati kept it going and cruised for a huge 13-run victory. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
Pittsburgh posted two quick runs in the Monday game, but didn’t score again until the ninth inning in an eventual 5-3 loss. In the Tuesday matchup, the Pirates had trouble on offense again, falling 14-1. Phillip Evans had the only RBI in that one.
For Wednesday’s starter role, the Pirates are sending out Chad Kuhl. Pittsburgh was careful with Kuhl in his Opening Day start versus the Cubs, holding him to three innings of work. After issuing three walks in the first frame, Kuhl began to find his command.
Over on the Cincinnati side, they peppered in enough runs to bang out a win Monday, with Mike Moustakas notching two hits with two runs and an RBI. On Tuesday, the Reds offense came alive and the team had no issues winning. Tyler Naquin finished with three hits, seven RBI and two runs.
For Wednesday’s game, the Reds’ starter will be Luis Castillo. In his first appearance on Opening Day against the Cardinals this year, Castillo had some difficulties. He took the loss with 3.1 innings and no strikeouts, leaving him with a 21.60 ERA currently.
The Pirates are 20-46 in their last 66 overall and 20-46 in their last 66 on grass. Pittsburgh is 15-36 in the last 51 in game three of a series and 1-7 in their last eight Wednesday games.
Meanwhile, the Reds are 10-1 in their last 11 in game three of a series and 5-1 in their last six Wednesday games. The under is 42-17-3 in the Reds’ last 62 Wednesday games and 14-6 in their last 20 overall.
PICK: I’m going to take a shot on the Pirates here. Castillo just didn’t look good on Opening Day versus St. Louis, and seemingly didn’t trust his changeup. Granted, I like him to pitch better here. As for Kuhl, if he can find a good groove and get through 4-5 innings in this one the Pirates should be in decent shape for a win. Should be an interesting matchup and a competitive game--if the Pirates offense shows up.
