The Boston Red Sox and the Baltimore Orioles meet Thursday in MLB action from Oriole Park.
The Red Sox are coming off a series versus the Rays this week. Boston took wins in the first two games, then on Wednesday the Sox kept it going with a seven-run victory. As for Baltimore they played the Yankees this week. The Orioles fell in the first pair, and in the Wednesday finale the O’s avoided the sweep with an extra-innings win. Boston got off to a cold start this year, but showed some life Monday versus Tampa with an 11-2 win and Tuesday with another victory 6-5. On Wednesday Boston did it again, notching a 9-2 victory to complete the sweep. Xander Bogaerts put up three this with two runs and an RBI in that one.
For the Thursday starting pitcher role, the Sox will go with Eduardo Rodriguez. It’s been a while since we’ve seen Rodriguez on the mound; he missed all of last year with myocarditis. In 2019, he went 19-6 with 213 strikeouts and is 5-2 in his career versus Baltimore.
Over on the Orioles’ side, they were able to sweep Boston in their opening series, but then couldn’t find any luck versus the Yankees with losses 7-0 and 7-2 in the first pair. On Wednesday, Baltimore came back from a 2-1 deficit to force extra innings and power out a 4-3 win.
For the Thursday starting pitcher role, Baltimore is going with Matt Harvey. Harvey went 4.2 innings in his Orioles debut, notching four strikeouts in that one. That gives Harvey a 3.86 ERA after the lone start.
The Red Sox are 25-11 in their last 36 Thursday games and 19-39 in their last 58 versus the AL East. Boston is 3-7 in their last 10 in game one of a series and the under is 4-1 in their last five Thursday games.
Meanwhile, the Orioles are 133-279 in their last 412 overall and 55-121 in their last 176 versus the AL East. Baltimore is 13-38 in their last 51 Thursday games and 27-79 in their last 106 in game one of a series.
PICK: I’m going to take a stab on Boston. Both teams have had mixed results so far, but this should be a pretty good series. The Red Sox finally got their offense going a little bit versus the Rays, and if Rodriguez can come in for a few good innings they should be in prime position to get a win. He’ll be a key piece of the Boston pitching staff this year if all goes well.
