The Arizona Diamondbacks and the Colorado Rockies meet in an NL West division matchup in MLB action from Coors Field on Thursday.
The Arizona Diamondbacks will look to bounce back after an 8-0 loss to the Rockies on Wednesday. Christian Walker and Carson Kelly each had a double while Wyatt Mathisen, Jose VanMeter and Josh Rojas each had a base hit as the D-Backs mustered up just five hits as a team in the losing effort. Madison Bumgarner took the loss, falling to 0-1 after allowing five runs on eight hits with four strikeouts over five innings of work. Merrill Kelly will start here and is 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA and 4 strikeouts this season. In his career, Kelly is 1-2 with a 7.64 ERA and 15 strikeouts against Colorado.
The Colorado Rockies will look to take care of business again after their win over Arizona last time out. Chris Owings led the charge, going 3 for 3 with a triple, a pair of doubles and two RBIs while Sam Hilliard had a triple and two RBIs as well. C.J. Cron had a double and an RBI while Garrett Hampson went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Josh Fuentes added an RBI as well to finish off the scoring for Colorado in the win. Yonathan Daza and Elias Diaz each had a base hit as well to finish off Colorado’s offense in the victory. Antonio Senzatela threw eight shutout innings, allowing just four hits with three strikeouts for his 1st win of the season. Jon Gray will start here and is 0-0 with a 1.80 ERA and 7 strikeouts this season. In his career, Gray is 4-5 with a 5.34 ERA and 57 strikeouts against Arizona.
Arizona is 13-27 in their last 40 games overall and 8-20 in their last 28 division games while the under is 5-2 in their last 7 games as an underdog. Colorado is 16-35 in their last 51 games overall and 7-19 in their last 26 home games while the over is 5-0 in their last 5 games against a team with a losing record. The over is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
I get why the D-Backs in an underdog role is worth a look being humiliated on Wednesday. However, Merrill Kelly didn’t look great in his first start back after Thoracic Outlet Syndrome surgery and I’m not overly keen to back him until we see a greater sample size of success as we saw what that injury has done to guys like Matt Harvey in the past. Jon Gray’s one of the few pitchers that pitches better at Coors Field and I think he gets the Rockies back on track with a win at home here.
