The Washington Nationals and the St. Louis Cardinals meet Tuesday in MLB action from Busch Stadium.
This will be the second installment of a three-game set between these teams this week. In the series opener on Monday, the Nationals powered out a three-run victory. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
Washington played a series versus the Dodgers over the weekend and didn’t have any luck with a three-loss sweep. In the Monday game, the Nationals jumped out to an early lead after four innings and didn’t look back in an eventual 5-2 win. Starter Erick Fedde put up 4.2 innings with one earned.
For Tuesday’s game two start, the Nats will go with Stephen Strasburg. In his lone start this year Strasburg was great, giving up just one hit, two walks and no earned over 6.0 innings alongside eight Ks. He carries a 3.18 ERA over 1,449.2 innings pitched in his career.
Over on the Cardinals’ side, they lost two of three games to the Brewers in their weekend series, winning Thursday and falling in the Saturday/Sunday games. On Monday, St. Louis scored twice in the first three innings but couldn’t come up with anything from there. The Cardinals managed a relatively paltry six hits as a team in the loss.
For the Tuesday game, the Cardinals will send out Jack Flaherty in the start. Flaherty has two starts to his credit this year, notching a 5.23 ERA with seven hits, six earned, two homers, six walks and 10 strikeouts in 10.1 total innings of work.
The Nationals are 6-1 in their last seven in game two of a series and 20-6 in their last 26 versus the NL Central. Washington is 21-8 in their last 29 Tuesday games and the under is 7-3-1 in their last 11 Tuesday games.
Meanwhile, the Cards are 4-9 in their last 13 Tuesday games and 1-4 in their last five in game two of a series. The over is 5-2-1 in St. Louis’ last eight Tuesday games and the under is 3-0-1 in their last four versus a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15.
PICK: I’m sticking with the Nationals. This will be a rematch of Game 3 in the 2019 National League Championship Series. For what it’s worth, Strasburg struck out 12 batters in seven innings during a huge Nats win that day. Working in Flaherty’s favor here is the home start; he owns a 2.78 ERA in 36 career games at Busch Stadium. That said, I still like Strasburg to win the duel.
