The San Diego Padres and the Pittsburgh Pirates meet Wednesday in MLB action from PNC Park.
This will be the third installment of a four-game set between these teams this week. The Padres took game one 6-2. In the Tuesday game, the Pirates notched a four-run win to even it up. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
San Diego scored three runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh inning on the way to a nice 6-2 win in Monday’s series opener. In game two Tuesday, the Padres coughed up six runs in the first three innings during an eventual 8-4 loss. Starter Blake Snell lasted just 0.2 innings with three earned.
For the game three starting role Wednesday, the Padres will send out Joe Musgrove. In his last outing, Musgrove tossed the Padres’ first-ever no-hitter against the Rangers. He logged 10 strikeouts in that one, and has 18 Ks on the season through 15.0 innings so far.
Over on the Pirates’ side, they couldn’t get much going offensively in Monday’s opener, notching just two runs on six hits. In the Tuesday game two, Pittsburgh scored five runs in the first two innings and posted 12 hits as a team.
For the Wednesday game, the Pirates will send out Tyler Anderson as the starter. This year so far, Anderson is 0-2 with 15 hits, six earned, three homers, two walks and 12 Ks in 10.1 total innings. That gives him a 5.23 ERA, and it’s worth mentioning that both starts came versus the Cubs.
The Padres are 9-3 in their last 12 in game three of a series and 0-5 in their last five Wednesday games. The under is 5-1 in the Padres’ last six in game three of a series and the over is 8-3 in their last 11 Wednesday games.
Meanwhile, the Pirates are 22-50 in their last 73 overall and 16-37 in their last 53 in game three of a series. Pittsburgh is 5-16 in their last 21 Wednesday games and the under is 13-4-2 in their last 19 in game three of a series.
PICK: I’m sticking with the Padres. It’ll be interesting to see what Musgrove can do for an encore here; he’s certainly got the motivation as the Pirates were the team that traded him to San Diego. Anderson should be able to keep Pittsburgh in the game on the other side, but with the way Musgrove has been throwing so far this year I like San Diego.
