The Washington Nationals will look to rebound after a 14-3 beatdown at the hands of the Cardinals on Tuesday. Josh Harrison led the way, going 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs while Juan Soto added a double of his own and an RBI to finish off Washington’s scoring in the loss. Kyle Schwarber went 2 for 3 with a double as well to cap off Washington’s offence as the Nets had just three batters combine for all six hits in the losing effort. Stephen Strasburg took the loss, falling to 0-1 after allowing seven earned runs on eight hits with three strikeouts over four innings of work. Joe Ross will start here and is 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 4 strikeouts this season. in his career, Ross is 2-0 with a 3.94 ERA and 11 strikeouts against St. Louis.
The St. Louis Cardinals will look to carry over the offence after a dominant win over the Nats on Tuesday. Paul Goldschmidt, Nolan Arenado, Matt Carpenter and Justin Williams each had three RBIs with Goldschmidt, Arenado and Williams each logging three RBIs and Goldy, Arenado and Carpenter each belting a home run in the win. Austin Dean had an Rbi as well while Dylan Carlson went 3 for 4 at the dish and Tommy Edman went 2 for 5 at the dish. Jack Flaherty and Paul DeJong each had a base hit as well to finish off the Cardinals’ offence as a team in the winning effort.Flaherty got the win to improve to 2-0 on the year after allowing one run on three hits while striking out six over five innings of work. Adam Wainwright will start here and is 0-1 with an 8.22 ERA and 7 strikeouts this season. in his career, Wainwright is 10-4 with a 3.10 ERA and 88 strikeouts against Washington.
Washington is 2-6 in their last 8 road games and 21-6 in their last 27 games against the NL Central while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 games as an underdog. St. Louis is 2-5 in their last 7 home games and 1-5 in their last 6 games as a favourite while the under is 3-0-1 in their last 4 games against the NL East. Washington is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams.
I get the case that could be made both ways here, as the Nationals will want to rebound from the humiliating loss on Tuesday, but Wainwright’s not the steadiest pitcher in the world. Instead, I’m going to side with the over once again. Like I said, I’m not a Wainwright guy, but Joe Ross isn’t the easiest guy to trust either. I think both offences do enough to get us over the number here when all is said and done.
