The Atlanta Braves and the Chicago Cubs meet in this week’s installment of Sunday Night Baseball from Wrigley Field in MLB action.
The Atlanta Braves will look to rebound after ending up on the wrong side of a 13-4 loss at the hands of the Cubs on Saturday. Ronald Acuna Jr. leads the Braves with a .433 batting average, a .493 OBP, 26 hits, 6 doubles, 7 home runs and 16 RBIs. Freddie Freeman has 4 homers with 9 RBIs while Dansby Swanson and Ozzie Albies each have 4 doubles this season. Marcell Ozuna also leads the Braves by striking out a team-high 21 times this season. Bryse Wilson will make his season debut here after going 1-0 with a 4.02 ERA and 15 strikeouts last season. This will be Wilson’s second career start against the Cubs.
The Chicago Cubs will look to pick up another W after Saturday’s victory. Willson Contreras leads the Cubs with a .282 batting average, a .420 OBP and 5 home runs, sharing the team lead in long balls with Kris Bryant who also has a team-high 12 hits and 4 doubles this season. Javier Baez has a team-high 11 RBIs but also has a team-high 25 strikeouts. Kyle Hendricks is expected to make the start here and is 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA and 10 strikeouts this season. In his career, Hendricks is 1-1 with a 2.66 ERA and 22 strikeouts against Atlanta.
Atlanta is 3-7 in their last 10 road games and 2-5 in their last 7 games overall while the under is 5-1 in their last 6 games as an underdog. Chicago is 4-9 in their last 13 games against the NL East and 2-5 in their last 7 games overall while the under is 9-2-1 in their last 12 games against a team with a losing record. Atlanta is 6-2 in the last 8 meetings between these two teams.
I get the allure of the Braves in the underdog role, but we’ve only seen a small sample size of Bryse Wilson and while it was a good one, it’s still a small sample size and hard to gauge for long-term results. Chicago loves playing at home under the lights and Hendricks is a pitcher that usually shuts opposing teams down when he’s at home. I’ll take my chances with the Cubs in Sunday’s matchup.
