The Tampa Bay Rays and the New York Yankees meet in an AL East division matchup in MLB action from Yankee Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Tampa Bay Rays will be out to build on a 6-3 win over the Yankees on Saturday. Joey Wendle leads the Rays with a .319 batting average as well as team-highs of 15 hits and 10 RBIs while Austin Meadows leads the Rays with 3 home runs and Yandy Diaz has a .411 OBP this season. Wendle also has a team-high 4 doubles on the year while Randy Arozarena’s chipped in 14 hits in 57 at-bats this season. Andrew Kittredge is expected to get the nod here for Tampa Bay and is 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA and 4 strikeouts this season. This will be Kittredge’s first career start against the Yankees, but he has made 17 relief appearances with a 2-1 record, a 4.09 ERA and 21 strikeouts.
The New York Yankees will look to bounce back after their loss to the Rays on Saturday. DJ LeMahieu has a .288 batting average and a team-high .383 OBP with a team-leading 15 hits while Aaron Judge leads the Bronx Bombers with 4 home runs and Giancarlo Stanton leads New York with 11 RBIs so far this season. LeMahieu also leads the Yankees with 4 doubles and 7 runs as well this season. Gerrit Cole will make the start here and is 2-0 with a 1.47 ERA and 29 strikeouts this season. In his career, Cole is 0-3 with a 4.07 ERA and 64 strikeouts against Tampa Bay.
Tampa Bay is 4-1 in their last 5 games as an underdog and 47-22 in their last 69 division games while the over is 6-0 in their last 6 games as a road underdog. New York is 80-34 in their last 114 home games and 2-6 in their last 8 games as a favorite while the under is 6-2 in their last 8 games as a home favorite. The over is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
I get the case that could be made for either side as Cole is one of the game’s top pitchers and this is a lot of plus money to leave on the table with Tampa Bay. With that said, I think that there’s going to be quite a few runs plated in this game as Kittredge hasn’t started a game since August of last year and Cole had issues dealing with the Rays in his first season in the AL East. I could easily see double-digits on the board by the end of this one, so give me the over in this spot.
