The St. Louis Cardinals and the Washington Nationals meet Tuesday in MLB action from Nationals Park.
This will be the second installment in a three-game set between these teams this week. In the opener on Tuesday, St. Louis secured a huge seven-run win. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
St. Louis played the Phillies over the weekend and lost two of three games. The lone victory came 9-4 on Saturday. In the Monday opener versus the Nats, The Cardinals scored 10 runs during a three-inning span on the way to a dominant 12-5 victory. St. Louis notched 12 team hits in that one.
For the Tuesday starting pitcher job, the Cardinals will go with veteran Adam Wainwright. In his three games so far, Wainwright has 12.2 innings with 19 hits, 11 runs (10 earned), two homers allowed, five walks, 14 strikeouts and a 7.11 ERA.
Over on the Nationals’ side, they managed a split series in four games versus the Diamondbacks over the weekend. In the Monday opener versus St. Louis, the Nats couldn’t stop the scoring onslaught and fell big. Starter Joe Ross managed 4.1 innings with 10 earned runs.
For Tuesday’s game two start, the Nationals will send out Patrick Corbin. In his two appearances so far this year Corbin has 6.1 innings with 12 hits, 16 runs (15 earned), four homers, seven walks, six Ks and a 21.32 ERA.
The Cardinals are 4-1 in their last five Tuesday games and 3-7 in their last 10 road games versus a left-handed starter. The over is 4-1 in St. Louis’ last six in game two of a series and 6-2-1 in the last nine Tuesday games.
Meanwhile, the Nats are 14-5 in their last 19 Tuesday games and 21-5 in their last 26 versus the NL Central. The under is 7-3-1 in Washington’s last 11 versus the National League Central as well.
PICK: I think I’m going to take the Cardinals in this one. Both these pitchers need a good outing here, though. Wainwright struck out seven Nationals back on Wednesday in his last game, but is still looking for his first victory. As for Corbin, he coughed up a career-high 10 runs in only two innings against Arizona in his last appearance. I like both guys to pitch better here but St. Louis should have plenty of opportunities to plate runs if all goes well.
