The Pittsburgh Pirates and the San Diego Padres meet in MLB action from Petco Park on Wednesday night.
The Pittsburgh Pirates will look to build off of their 2-1 win over the Padres on Tuesday night. Bryan Reynolds went 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI while Colin Moran and Adam Frazier each had a double as well with Moran going 2 for 4 at the dish in the win. Phillip Evans, Mitch Keller, Kevin Newman, Erik Gonzalez and Ka’al Tom each had a base hit as well to finish off Pittsburgh’s offense as a team in the win. Mitch Keller got the win on the mound after throwing 5.2 shutout innings, allowing just two hits with five strikeouts. Richard Rodriguez closed things out for his 5th save of the season. JT Brubaker is expected to start here and is 2-2 with a 2.63 ERA and 30 strikeouts this season. This will be Brubaker’s first career start against the Padres.
The San Diego Padres will look for a bounce back performance after their loss to the Pirates on Wednesday. Austin Nola accounted for the lone Padres RBI while Wil Myers, Jake Cronenworth and Trent Grisham each had a base knock as the Padres cranked out just four hits as a team in the losing effort. Dinelson Lamet threw two shutout innings in the start but Ryan Weathers ended up with the loss in relief to fall to 1-1 on the year. Yu Darvish is expected to get the start here and is 3-1 with a 2.13 ERA and 49 strikeouts this season. In his career, Darvish is 3-2 with a 2.30 ERA and 44 strikeouts against the Pirates.
Pittsburgh is 12-4 in their last 16 games against the NL West and 14-38 in their last 52 road games while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 road games. San Diego is 2-5 in their last 7 games against the NL Central and 5-2 in their last 7 games against a team with a losing record while the under is 13-3 in their last 16 home games. Pittsburgh is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings between these two teams.
This is a hard series to really get a feel for as not many would’ve anticipated a Pirates surprise win on Tuesday. With that said, I think Wednesday’s game plays true to from as an underrated pitcher’s duel Darvish ahs been arguably the best starter for the Padres this season while Brubaker leads the Pirates’ starting rotation in ERA and I think a similar result to Tuesday’s could be in store on Wednesday. Give me the under.
