The Cincinnati Reds and the Pittsburgh Pirates meet Friday in MLB action from PNC Park. Cincinnati played a pair versus the White Sox this week, losing both by a combined 11 runs. As for the Pirates, they’re coming off a series against the Cubs. Pittsburgh split the first pair in that set, then on Thursday the Pirates lost in a blowout. The Reds didn’t have any luck against the White Sox this week. Cincinnati lost 7-1 in the Tuesday game then followed that up with a 6-1 loss Wednesday. Game two starter Sonny Gray lasted 4.2 innings with five earned on five hits and two walks.

For the starter job in the Friday game the Reds will send out Luis Castillo. Over his 182.1 innings this year Castillo has 175 hits, 93 runs (82 earned), 19 homers allowed, 72 walks, 187 Ks and a 4.05 ERA.

Over on the Pirates’ side, they managed an 8-6 win over the Cubs Tuesday but then fell 3-2 in the Wednesday game. In the Thursday rubber match Pittsburgh gave up 13 hits in a 6-0 defeat. Starter Miguel Yajure put up 2.0 innings with seven earned, seven hits and two walks.

Starting pitcher for the Pirates on Friday will be Wil Crowe. In his 110.2 innings this year Crowe has 125 hits, 75 runs (71 earned), 25 homers, 55 walks, 102 Ks and a 5.77 ERA overall.

The Reds are 26-8 in their last 34 Friday games and 1-6 in their last seven after an off day. Cincinnati is 1-4 in their last five on the road versus a right-handed starter as well.

Meanwhile, the Pirates are 20-47 in their last 67 versus a team with a winning record and 16-44 in their last 60 versus the NL Central. The over is also 4-0 in Pitt’s last four in game one of a series.

PICK: I’m going to stick with Cincinnati. Crowe has been a mixed bag over his last three starts. In that span he’s got a combined seven earned on 15 hits and seven walks in 13.2 innings. As for Castillo, he’s got just two earned in his last two starts over a span of 12.1 innings on 11 hits and five walks. I like Castillo to win the starter battle here and keep the Reds in a winning position.
