The St. Louis Cardinals and the Arizona Diamondbacks meet in MLB action from Chase Field on Thursday.

The St. Louis Cardinals will be out to build on their 4-0 win over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday. Tommy Edman and Eduardo Sosa each had two RBIs to make up the scoring for the Cardinals in the win, with Edman belting a pair of solo home runs. Nolan Arenado added a double and Paul Goldschmidt had a base hit as well as the Cards mustered up just five hits as a team in the winning effort. John Gant got the win after allowing just five hits while striking out three over five shutout innings to improve his record to 4-3 this year. Carlos Martinez will start here and is 3-4 with a 4.18 ERA and 24 strikeouts this season. In his career, Martinez is 3-1 with a 2.51 ERA and 43 strikeouts against Arizona.

The Arizona Diamondbacks will look to rebound from a 5-4 loss at the hands of the San Francisco Giants last time out. Josh Rojas led the charge, going 3 for 5 with a double and two RBIs while Nick Ahmed went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI and Ketel Marte chipped in an RBI of his own to finish off Arizona’s scoring as a team in the loss. Pavin Smith went 3 for 4 at the dish and Josh Reddick had a pair of hits while Eduardo Escobar added a base hit as well to cap off the D-Backs’ offense as a team in defeat. Merrill Kelly allowed two runs on five hits while striking out six over six innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Alex Young ended up with the loss, falling to 1-4 on the year in relief. Matt Peacock will start here and is 1-1 with a 4.91 ERA and 15 strikeouts this season. This will be Peacock’s first career start against ST. Louis.

St. Louis is 5-0 in their last 5 games as a road favorite and 1-4 in their last 5 games overall while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 games against the NL West. Arizona is 6-20 in their last 26 games overall and 0-8 in their last 8 games against a team with a winning record while the under is 5-0 in their last 5 games as an underdog. The over is 5-2 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams in Arizona.

Carlos Martinez came back in his first game off of the IL and performed well, and I think the Cardinals and Martinez specifically, carry that over against a struggling Arizona bunch right now. The D-Backs just can’t get out of their own way and throwing Matt Peacock to the mound won’t fix things anytime soon. Give me St. Louis here.
