The Chicago Cubs and the New York Mets meet Monday in MLB action from Citi Field. The Cubs are coming off a weekend series versus the Cardinals. Chicago won the first two installments of that set, then on Sunday the Cubs finished the job with a shutout victory. As for the Mets, they played the Padres over the weekend. New York also won their first two games, then on Sunday the Mets fell by four runs. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.

Chicago had a successful series versus the rival Cardinals over the weekend, winning 8-5 Friday and 7-2 on Saturday. In the Sunday finale, the Cubs posted four team hits in a 2-0 shutout win. Zach Davies lasted 6.2 innings with two hits and no earned.

For the Monday starting pitcher role, the Cubs are sending out Jake Arrieta. This year Arrieta has a 5-6 record with a 4.97 ERA and 48 Ks. He went five innings with one run against the Padres in his last outing.

Over on the Mets’ side, they took the Friday game versus the Padres 3-2, then won 4-1 on Saturday. In the Sunday game, New York gave up six runs in the seventh inning in a 7-3 defeat. Joey Luchessi posted 5.0 innings with one earned on five hits.
For Monday’s starter job, the Mets are sending out David Peterson. Over his 47.0 innings this year, Peterson has 50 hits, 36 runs (33 earned), nine homers allowed, 21 walks, 53 Ks and a 6.32 ERA overall.

The Cubs are 4-0 in their last four versus a team with a winning record and 4-1 in their last five versus the NL East. Chicago is 13-4 in the last 17 Monday games and 36-16 in their last 52 in game one of a series.

Meanwhile, the Mets are 2-6 in their last eight Monday games and 2-5 in their last seven versus the NL Central. The over is 4-1 in New York’s last five in game one of a series and 8-3 in their last 11 Monday games.

PICK: I’m sticking with the Cubs. Peterson has had some difficulties lately, and the Mets are in a bit of a jam since they need to keep trotting him out there. Over his last two games, Peterson has just 3.0 innings with 11 hits, nine earned runs, four walks and four strikeouts. Over his last four, he’s posted a 9.88 ERA and really needs to turn things around. Chicago had their offense working well over the weekend and I like another good game from the Cubs here.
