Pittsburgh did well versus the Mets over the weekend, posting wins 4-1 Friday and 9-7 Saturday. In Sunday’s game the Pirates had a 6-0 lead after one inning but couldn’t plate another run as they allowed the Mets to come back for a 7-6 result.
For the starter job in the Monday game the Pirates will send out Chase De Jong. Over his 38.2 innings this year De Jong has 42 hits, 24 earned runs, eight homers allowed, 17 walks, 33 Ks and a 5.59 ERA.
Over on the Diamondbacks’ side, they fell 5-1 to the Cubs in the Friday opener then dropped again 4-2 in the Saturday game two. On Sunday, Arizona was able to avoid the sweep with a 6-4 win. Starter Merrill Kelly managed 8.0 innings with six hits and four earned in that one.

For the starter job in the Monday game, the Diamondbacks are going with Caleb Smith. So far this year Smith has a 4.54 ERA with a 2-6 record and 81 strikeouts to his name.
The Pirates are 15-36 in their last 51 Monday games and 22-60 in their last 82 road games. Pittsburgh is 16-44 in their last 60 road games with a total of 9.0-10.5 and the over is 6-1 in their last seven in game one of a series.
Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks are 5-16 in their last 21 in game one of a series and 6-20 in their last 26 at home versus a right-handed starter. Arizona is 1-4 in their last five Monday games and 6-22 in their last 28 home games.
PICK: I’m going to take a stab on the Pirates here, but it’s really contingent on what De Jong can do. He’s got four or more earned runs in three of his last four games, totaling 14 earned in a span of 14.2 innings. That said, De Jong is pretty reliable when he’s on, and he’s posted a few good outings this year. Pittsburgh’s offense is going to have to show up, but I think they’ve got a good shot in this one.
