The Arizona Diamondbacks and the Chicago Cubs meet in MLB action from Wrigley Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Arizona Diamondbacks will look to build on their 7-3 win over the Cubs from Saturday. Daulton Varsho had two hits with a home run and three RBIs while Asdrubal Cabrera and Alex Young each had two RBIs to cap off Arizona’s scoring with Cabrera adding a pair of doubles while Young belted a home run. Eduardo Escobar and Merrill Kelly each had a double with Escobar adding two hits while Nick Ahmed added a base knock of his own to finish off Arizona’s offense as a team. Kelly got the win on the mound to improve to 7-7 on the year after allowing two runs on five hits while striking out six over six innings of work. Caleb Smith will start here and is 3-6 with a 4.38 ERA and 88 strikeouts this season.
The Chicago Cubs will attempt to rebound from their disappointing loss at home on Saturday. Willson Contreras had a solo home run while Kris Bryant went 2 for 3 with a triple and Anthony Rizzo and Alec Mills each had a double in the loss. Jason Heyward and Rafael Ortega each had base hits as well as the Cubs put up seven hits as a team in the loss. Mills threw five innings and allowed two runs on three hits but it was Andrew Chafin that took the loss against his former team, falling to 0-2 on the year. Trevor Williams will start here and is 3-2 with a 5.68 ERA and 55 strikeouts this season.
Arizona is 11-42 in their last 52 road games and 12-47 in their last 59 games overall while the over is 5-1 in their last 6 Sunday games. Chicago is 21-10 in their last 31 home games and 6-17 in their last 23 games overall while the under is 7-1-1 in their last 9 Sunday games.
Ah, the age old problem of having two bad pitchers between two offenses that have been pretty bad lately, and in Arizona’s case, for much of the season. With that said, I’m still going to side with the Cubs here as I’ve watched Caleb Smith get batted around like a pinata for much od the season and I honestly can’t expect the Arizona Diamondbacks to win games consistently. Give me the Cubs.
