The Oakland Athletics and the San Diego Padres meet Wednesday in MLB action from Petco Park. This will be the second installment in a quick two-game set between these teams this week. In the Tuesday opener, the Padres powered out a three-run win. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.

Oakland played the Mariners over the weekend, notching a Thursday win before three straight losses. In the Tuesday opener versus the Padres, the A’s put up 11 team hits in an eventual 7-4 defeat. James Kaprielian had 4.1 frames with seven hits and six earned runs.

For the starter job in the Wednesday game, the A’s will send out Sean Manaea. In his 116.2 innings of work this year Manaea has 110 hits, 42 runs (41 earned), 14 homers allowed, 28 walks, 128 Ks and a 3.16 ERA.

Over on the Padres’ side, they played the Marlins over the weekend, splitting the series with two wins in four games. In the Tuesday matchup, San Diego had five runs in the fifth inning on the way to the win. Chris Paddack managed 6.0 innings with nine hits and three earned runs.
For the starter gig on Wednesday, Blake Snell will hit the mound for San Diego. Across 80.1 innings this year Snell has 74 hits, 45 runs (44 earned), 11 homers allowed, 51 walks, 104 strikeouts and a 4.93 ERA.

The A’s are 45-19 in their last 64 road games versus a lefty starter and 71-31 in their last 102 overall versus a lefty starter. The A’s are 11-5 in their last 16 in game two of a series and 43-21 in the last 64 Wednesday games.

Meanwhile, the Padres are 4-1 in their last five in game two of a series and 25-9 in their last 34 home games. San Diego is 13-5 in their last 18 versus a lefty starter and 20-8 in their last 28 at home versus a lefty starter.

PICK: I’m going to go Padres here. We should have a pretty nice starter matchup on our hands regardless, though. Snell has given up five earned over his last four outings (four in one game) in a span of 19.0 innings. As for Manaea, he’s coming off a nice start versus the Mariners with 7.0 innings, three hits, three walks and one earned. I like both guys to pitch fairly well here in a tight game. Should be a fun one to watch.
