The New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles meet Tuesday in MLB action from Oriole Park. The Yankees just finished up a one-off game versus the Twins on Monday. In that matchup, New York pulled off a crazy comeback victory. As for the O’s, they played the Blue Jays over the weekend. Baltimore won Friday but lost the other three games in that set. New York had a rough time with the Mets over the weekend, winning Saturday but falling in the other pair. In the Monday game versus the Twins, the Yankees looked dead in the water with a 5-0 deficit for much of the game. New York came back with five runs across three innings to tie it up, then walked off in the bottom of the 10th for a 6-5 win.
For the starter job in the Tuesday matchup, the Yankees will send out ace Gerrit Cole. In his 158.2 innings this year Cole has 123 hits, 53 runs (49 earned), 19 homers allowed, 34 walks, 217 Ks and a 2.78 ERA.
Over on the Orioles’ side, they got a win 6-3 over the Blue Jays but then fell in the next trio. Baltimore lost 11-10 and 11-2 in the Saturday games, then fell by a whopping 22-7 margin in the Sunday finale. Starter Zac Lowther put up 2.0 innings with seven earned on four hits and three walks in that one.
Starting pitcher for the Tuesday matchup will be Baltimore’s Alexander Wells. Over seven games (four starts) this year Wells has a 1-2 record with a 7.15 ERA and 17 Ks in 22.2 innings.
The Yankees are 51-24 in their last 75 Tuesday games and 35-17 in their last 52 with a total of 7.0-8.5. New York is 0-6 in their last six versus the AL East and the over is 19-7-1 in their last 27 Tuesday games.
Meanwhile, the O’s are 23-52 in their last 75 home games and 31-81 in their last 112 overall. Baltimore is 41-109 in their last 150 in game one of a series and 23-66 in their last 89 after an off day.
PICK: I’m probably sticking with New York due to Cole being on the mound, but staying away. However with the big number here, you wouldn’t be crazy for taking the Orioles on a value pick; the Yankees are just a hard team to trust these days. In any case, Cole has given up just four earned over his last five starts but he did have a choppy outing versus Toronto his last time up (3.2 innings; three runs). I like Cole to pitch well here but the bullpen and the Yankees offense are going to have to back him up.
