The San Diego Padres and the St. Louis Cardinals meet Friday in MLB action from Busch Stadium. San Diego is coming off a series versus the Giants this week. The Padres lost two of the first three games in that set, then on Thursday San Diego took a three-run win. As for the Cardinals, they played the Mets this week. St. Louis pulled off a sweep in that series, and they’ve won five straight overall. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.

San Diego fell 9-1 Monday and 6-1 Tuesday to the Giants, but managed a 9-6 win on Wednesday. In the Thursday game, the Padres posted 14 hits on the way to a 7-4 victory. Nabil Crismatt did the bulk of the pitching on 4.0 clean innings with three hits and a walk.

For the starter gig in the Friday opener, San Diego will send out Vince Velasquez. This year Velasquez is 3-6 with a 5.95 ERA and 85 Ks.

Over on the Cardinals’ side, they took three wins over the Mets this week: 7-0 Monday, 7-6 Tuesday and 11-4 on Wednesday. In the finale victory, St. Louis starter Jon Lester put up 6.0 innings with two earned, six hits and seven strikeouts.

Starting pitcher for the Cardinals on Friday will be Miles Mikolas. Across his six starts this year, Mikolas has an 0-2 record, a 5.47 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 26.1 innings of work.

The Padres are 6-1 in their last seven versus the NL Central and 0-4 in their last four in game one of a series. The under is 4-0-1 in the Padres’ last five Friday games as well.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals are 4-1 in their last five at home and 5-2 in their last seven Friday games. St. Louis is also 4-1 in their last five versus a team with a winning record.

PICK: I’m going to try the Cardinals here. St. Louis has been on a nice run lately with five straight victories and wins in seven of their last eight. Mikolas will be something of a question mark here, though. He’s got 12 earned on 16 hits and four walks over 13.0 innings in his last three starts. Mikolas is going to need a good start in this one, but if he does well St. Louis should be fine.
